Basic Purpose
The Continuous Improvement / Safety Coordinator works directly with operations to drive positive change in our operation. This individual is responsible for engaging members of our team to solve problems and implement processes which prevent losses from reoccurring and manages the plant environmental, health and safety programs to ensure a safe and incident-free work environment. This individual will work cross departmentally with operations, quality, maintenance and EHS to build a better organization every day. The Continuous Improvement / Safety Supervisor is a creative thinker who is able to inspire a team to challenge existing processes and develop more efficient/safe ways of working.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety
- Coordinates all aspects of plant environmental, health and safety ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures
- Actively interact with employees to promote safe acts. Leads and influences the organization to drive world class level safety performance.
- Champions the Safety Committee process and encourage greater participation and provide support and direction in an effort to instill an employee driven safety structure.
- Promotes plant safety by working closely with all departments to analyze current situations and recommends safety improvements.
- Develops, implements and recommends programs and practices designed to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses including but not limited to ergonomic assessments and job hazard analysis.
- Analyze incident data to identify trends and incident types that can be prevented.
- Oversee the incident investigation process to determine root cause and timely corrective action.
- Provide a floor presence for employees on safety matters, and drive safety process ownership to the floor level where appropriate.
- Facilitate the plantwide safety audit process for the facility
- Manage and monitor training programs to meet Occupational Safety and Health requirements.
- Assure all records are kept in accordance with State and Federal regulations including OSHA logs, Environmental permits, and training documents.
- Measures, audits, and evaluates effectiveness of safety programs.
- Works closely with Human Resources Manager in managing Worker’s Compensation.
- Schedules annual compliance training requirements, i.e.; hearing test, fit testing, air and noise monitoring, respirator physicals, etc.
- Mentors Supervisors, Manager, and front-line employees on safety and environmental related opportunities.
- Responsible for reporting food safety and quality issues and initiate action, as necessary.
- Follow all Food Safety guidelines, such as, but not limited to: GMP’s, Allergen Program, Quality, HACCP, Sanitation, Safety
Continuous Improvement
- Engage the operations team in the development of standard work
- Lead/facilitate Continuous Improvement brainstorming, prioritizing, or ideation sessions
- Facilitate Kaizen events, project sessions, brainstorming, etc. events at shop-floor
- Support development of standards & training material
- Facilitate Corrective And Preventative Action (CAPA) reviews with area stakeholders to identify root causes and prevent reoccurrence of issues
- Manage and drive productivity projects for the assigned functional area
- Teach LEAN tools & principles to team members throughout the organization
- Utilize LEAN methodologies and problem-solving tools to drive a structured approach to continuous improvement.
- Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the functional area assigned
- Own productivity projects which will deliver dollars to the bottom line
- Develop dashboards & reports as a power user of our Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
Minimum Requirements:
- 2- 5 years’ experience in a Plant Operations, Engineering, Safety or Continuous Improvement role or related capacity
- Bachelors Degree or higher in engineering, industrial science, business, environmental or occupational health sciences or another relevant field with an emphasis on manufacturing is Preferred
- Bilingual speaking and writing preferred (Spanish)
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures
- Knowledge of basic LEAN principles
- Strong organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Familiar with basic computer concepts and operations; proficient on Microsoft Office Suites,
- Ability to manage priorities and work flow, handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to understand all safety requirements and cautions.
- Ability to perform any necessary physical labor.
- Ability to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals at various organizational levels.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Understanding of basic principles of the SQF program and other food safety policies/procedures
