Under the supervision of the Trades Supervisor and MCFM Management, the HVAC Mechanic coordinates with a unit or group of operational or technical employees. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, repair and maintenance must constitute a primary part of the job. The individual also inspects buildings, facilities, and equipment to ascertain needed repairs and make recommendations/follow-up to supervision. Monitors unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures. The HVAC Mechanic may be assigned to another shift and may work mandatory overtime as required.

- Working knowledge of PC and PC compatible computers utilizing MS Office, Outlook, Excel and computerized maintenance system (Maximo).
- Ability to understand and apply University and Departmental policies and procedures
- University and/or Medical Center environment experience
- Experience repairing and maintaining HVAC and Refrigeration systems and equipment.
- Experience:
- Completion of a four-year apprenticeship program or equivalent experience
- Minimum five years’ experience as a journey-level HVAC and Refrigeration in commercial/institutional buildings performing all levels of construction and maintenance activities.
- Bachelor degree in related area and / or equivalent five years or more experience.
- Knowledge of:
- Procedures and techniques for assigned staff to ensure timely completion of HVAC and Refrigeration projects, and insures that safety standards and procedures are meeting compliance.
- Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration systems, air balancing, and other related systems.
- Inspection of HVAC and Refrigeration work performed by outside contractors.
- State and local regulations pertaining to HVAC and Refrigeration standards, codes, regulations, and construction practices applicable to HVAC and Refrigeration systems in commercial and hospital construction.
- Proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions
- Installation of copper, steel, galvanized steel piping.
- General computer applications such as Microsoft(Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to:
- Provide technical input on HVAC and Refrigeration work concerning planned construction and work projects in progress.
- Plan and develop modifications to existing HVAC and Refrigeration systems.
- Develop job specifications, diagrams, read blueprints and skill in the use of HVAC and Refrigeration mathematics.
- Estimate to job costs, prepares material lists, and equipment to insure their safe and efficient operations.
- Attend to trouble calls for emergency repairs to HVAC and Refrigeration systems and equipment
- Repair and perform preventative maintenance on hydronic, steam, refrigeration, and pneumatic and DDC control systems and all related components.
- Demonstrated use of HVAC and Refrigeration equipment and tools common to the trade
- Work in steam tunnels and pits with elevated temperatures, pipe shafts, crawl spaces, and other confined spaces requiring stooping, crawling, and bending
- Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude to deal effectively with clients and co-workers and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Provide excellent customer service to the UCSF community, vendors, and other outside agencies.
- Work cooperatively with vendors and with University faculty and staff
- Effectively work individually or in teams as well as with diverse groups.
- Effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically using mobile devices/desktops.
- Effectively in a service oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities
- Plan and layout work, install or modify plumbing systems, diagnose plumbing system, fixture, and component malfunctions
- Problem solving skills and sound judgment
- Understand job safety on the work site in the use of ladders and scaffolding
- Communicate clearly, verbally and written
- Lift 50 pounds, to bend, stoop, crawl, and climb ladders, and to walk for extended periods.
- Work weekends, holidays, respond to emergencies when contacted and work vacation relief on other shifts if needed.
