The purpose of this position is to, under the direction of the Director of Comparative Medicine (CM) and Attending Veterinarian at AbbVie Bay Area (ABA), and in coordination with the Vivarium Coordinator, lead essential functions of the operation of the ABA vivarium.
Responsibilities:
•Leads/supervises day-to-day activities of the ABA Animal Technicians (e.g., autoclaving, cage wash, cage-change, sanitation activities, environmental monitoring, supply levels, etc.) and designing and implementing regular validation metrics for each activity.
•Maintains appropriate documentation, handling, and archiving of data, as required by research, veterinary procedures, and/or regulatory (including company) guidelines.
•Leads training activities related to working safely with animals and animal handling, biosafety and biosecurity practices, biomethodology (e.g., dosing, tissue collection, etc.) and proper operation of instrumentation (e.g. autoclaves, washers, racks, blowers, BSCs, etc.), and assist the veterinarian with the provision of proper veterinary care (animal care management, anesthesia, surgery, medical treatment, recovery, etc.)
•Adapts work processes and methods based on findings and literature review with limited supervision. Understands scientific and veterinary principles to modify procedures in response to changing conditions and applies processes to maintain or improve efficiencies with little to no oversight.
•Leads activities related to supporting investigator requests (e.g. ordering animals, taking regular animal census, creating POs, etc.).
•Monitors compliance with corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance. Ensures that standards are met. Works and trains within the animal care and use program as prescribed by management and reviews and gives input to SOPs, training, modules, and compliance documents.
•Maintains daily upkeep of area in function with high attention to detail. Plans and monitors resources needed to operate the vivarium and coordinates with Facilities Department. Recognizes and reports operations issues in facility to vivarium management.
•Assures duties are completed accurately in focus area not to impact pipeline activities and/or integrity of regulatory expectations.
•Performs routine husbandry duties (cage change, cage wash, and sanitation) as needed.
•Able to work collaboratively with Comparative Medicine staff members, research staff, and supporting groups (EHS, Facilities, Shipping/Receiving).
