Disability Support Services (DSS) at The George Washington University recognizes disability in the context of diversity. The ASL interpreter provides interpreting/transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing students and other hearing impaired college clientele using manual and oral methods of communication.
· Effectively, accurately, and impartially conveys the thought, intent, and spirit of a speaker to deaf and hard of hearing individuals. · Interprets both receptively and expressively. · Assesses individual communication skills in speech, lip-reading, signs, and fingerspelling in order to utilize the most appropriate mode of communication with each individual. · Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite. Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on the scheduled academic or university related events. · Contributes to DSS biannual newsletter. · Attends advising sessions, classes, labs, faculty/student conferences, tutoring sessions, group discussions and other authorized college-related activities with deaf and hard of hearing students to interpret. · May provide interpreting services for functions outside of the classroom, events such as student orientations, commencements, other campus-wide events and extracurricular activities, etc when requested in advance. · Assists with preparation and production of text to ASL translation materials such as websites, surveys, etc. · Observes problems encountered in accessing class materials or presentation contents and communicates to appropriate support personnel. · Utilizes sign vocabulary adequate to ensure proper interpretation for a variety of discipline-specific jargon related to the field of study presented. · Completes all required training and professional development sessions to maintain certification awarded by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. · Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Professional Conduct of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
