Description of Position
Provides direct school nursing services; assists in planning school health programs; and serves as resource person in preparing health education curricula. Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Identifies those pupils with health problems that interfere with effective learning.
- Acts as a resource person in the teaching of health, safety and drug abuse.
- Shares with all certificated personnel the responsibility for student progress.
- Works toward the promotion of physical well-being, feelings of self-worth, and a positive attitude.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Non-Instructional Duties
- Identifies health needs and teaches others to observe and report, including the heed for a modified school program.
- Consults with community physicians, local and county health and welfare departments on the status of pupil and community health.
- Processes and disseminates information from local and county health and welfare departments.
- Maintains a file of health records and medical rooms for first aid, examination and testing.
- Makes required reports to the county health department.
- Maintains and motivates the improvement of school and community health standards.
- Counsels with pupils and parents to develop appropriate plans of action leading to the solution of mental and physical health problems.
- Responsible for conducting mandated hearing, vision and dental appraisal and immunization programs.
- Works with principals in scheduling and giving supportive service.
10. Attends conferences, demonstrations or exhibits to keep abreast of current trends.
11. Appraises the sanitary conditions of school plants.
12. Communicates to staff the need for community welfare assistance.
13. Communicates with parents through a variety of means.

Duties Related to Maintenance of Control and Learning Environment
- Supervises pupil activities.
- Provides support for the establishment and maintenance of standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve effective participation in all learning activities.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Training, and Experience
- Baccalaureate degree and current California R.N. Registration; possession of or eligible for California credential with an authorization as school nurse. Experience as a school nurse is desirable.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of school health programs such as vision, hearing screening, immunization requirements, Child Health Disability Prevention Program, etc.;
- Knowledge of health curriculum and methods of instruction for children through grade eight.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other school personnel, parents, children and agencies to promote the health of the child;
