New Jersey’s academic health center, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) takes an integrated approach to educating students, providing clinical care, and conducting research, all with the goal of improving human health. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Patient Representative for NJMS-Clinical and Admin Staff. The primary purpose of the Surgical Representative position is to serve as a core member of the Department of Surgery team, utilizing specialized knowledge, skills and competencies in patient management and care coordination. He/she is an asset to the patient and Faculty/Department, guiding a variety of steps in surgical patient care, from appointment to patient visit.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Answers the telephone with a pleasant demeanor, always identifies self and department.
- Schedules patients for initial, follow-up and post-operative office visits. Regularly communicates with clinical staff regarding patient health issues and complications.
- Coordinates and authorizes patients’ surgeries and associated testing (diagnostic and follow-up imaging, PATs, etc.)
- In coordination with Department Administration and the financial team, works to maximize reimbursement.
- Mailing referral letters and following up with referring physicians; aids in Department marketing as required.
- Patient rep for Colorectal SurgerySurgical rep for the Transgender Program, assisting with coordinating, scheduling and authorizing all surgeries for transgender program.
- Liaison between patients, physicians and mid-level providers.
- Functions as team member handling both routine and complex, issues and problems.
- Counsels patients with regards to more complex inquires, payment arrangements, third party practices, etc.
- Refers patients to financial counseling department and back-end resources, as appropriate
