MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY: The Director of Guidance and Program Development is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of comprehensive guidance programs that ensure equal educational access, opportunity, and treatment for all students, including those with Bilingual/ESL and special educational needs. This role requires collaboration with various administrative staff and external agencies to facilitate the inclusion of all students in the mainstream instructional program, support career readiness initiatives, and expand opportunities for academic and technical education
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1) Leadership, Supervision and Evaluation:
a) Oversee the hiring, monitoring, and evaluation of the 6-12 Guidance Counselors;
b) Conduct regular staff meetings to review goals, progress, and areas for growth;
c) Ensure high standards of performance and professional development for all staff involved in guidance services;
d) Design the high school master schedule to ensure it is created to meet the needs of all students, establishes clear pathways to the most rigorous
courses and places teachers in assignments where they are positioned for success; and
e) Assist in the creation of the middle school master schedule, if needed, and ensure that the 6-12 continuum of instruction and pathways to the most
rigorous courses are clearly communicated to students and their families.
2) Monitoring of Student Programming:
a) Monitor and assess student program information and planning;
b) Monitor student progress (i.e., academic progress, eligibility, and graduation requirements and
c) Establish short-term and long-term goals for the guidance department
3) Inclusion and Access:
a) Facilitate the inclusion of students with Bilingual/ESL and/or special educational needs in mainstream instructional programs in collaboration with administrative staff; and
b) Monitor and coordinate with the administrative colleagues regarding course requirements, scheduling procedures, and enrollment composition to ensure
equitable educational access and opportunity for all students
4) Program Creation, Coordination and Articulation:
a) Conduct regular program articulation meetings for middle and senior high school guidance counselors to ensure continuity of programs;
b) Train all counseling staff to establish and maintain a student centered, engaging practices; and
c) Collaborate with district administrative staff, Supervisors of Instruction, and building principals to identify programming gaps and address them accordingly
5) Representation and Advocacy:
a) Represent the Morris School District and Guidance Department at meetings with community agencies, planning committees, Board of Education, public meetings, and professional conferences and workshops, as requested by the administration; and
b) Participate in school and district advisory committees, administrative meetings, and workshops
6) Testing and AP Program Development and Expansion:
a) Coordinate scheduling and administration of state assessments, College Board and AP exams;
b) Monitor AP course enrollment to ensure all students have access and opportunities to achieve at the highest level; and
c) Design dual enrollment programs that meet student needs and support the continued growth and development of the STEM Academy
d) Collaborate with the AP Instructional Coach(es) to monitor and address areas for growth in the AP program
7) Supporting College and Career Counseling and Planning:
a) Stay updated on trends in college admissions, career opportunities, and workforce needs;
b) Oversee the development of personalized college and career plans for students which includes guiding students through the college
application process, including essay writing and interviews;
c) Review and monitor college recommendations;
d) Collaborate with Guidance Advisory Committee to address concerns suggestions from parents; Communicate and network with college and university representatives; and
e) Coordinate/create department parent/student evenings on topics relevant to college admissions such as Financial Aid Night and Mini-College Fairs
8) Career and Technical Education (CTE):
a) Expand programming for non-college-bound students
b) Foster the relationship with Morris County School of Technology to connect students to vocational training, apprenticeships, and workforce entry opportunities
c) Organize career days, job shadowing opportunities, and internships
d) Collaborate with the state workforce development system, higher education institutions, business and industry, and other state agencies to create rigorous programs of study
e) Assist in the administration of Perkins V funds and approve all CTE secondary programs in the 16 Career Clusters
9) Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee
