Position Description
Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.
What you will do at Harris County Public Library:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Outreach Services and the Division Director of PPO this position is responsible for the libraries and programs at HCJPD locations. This position maintains and runs existing libraries, works to create and expand new libraries at HCJPD residences. This includes selecting titles, circulation, weeding and shelf maintenance. This position also provides enrichment programming to HCJPD locations, both in the classroom and as part of the library.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Provides library services to youth at HCJPD Facilities: including collection development and circulation
Create and provide programming to HCJPD locations
Coordinates with additional HCJPD sites as needed to maintain their collections and programs
Assesses facilities needs and adjusts the library services accordingly to better serve the youth
Coordinates with facility staff to create opportunities for youth volunteer library workers
Communicates clearly and consistently with HCJPD staff to ensure integrated library services
Other duties as assigned

Requirements
UNOFFICIAL COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED ALONG WITH THE APPLICATION
Education:
Bachelors degree of Education, Social Services, Library Services or related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience working with youth
Additional Requirements:
Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties
Unofficial copies of transcripts are required along with the application.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of the landscape of Young Adult and Middle Grade Books
High energy level and passion for serving all young people
Ability to take initiative and work independently, with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively with HCPL and HCJPD staff
Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
Proficient with the Internet and Office 365
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
Ability to work well with public and staff members
Ability to exercise initiative and act with discretion

Typical shifts are Day, Evening, Nights, Weekends, etc.
May require attending meetings, council sessions, or after-hours events and off-site meetings.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
This job typically operates in a professional office environment with overhead lighting and long periods of screen time.
Daily use of a computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell).
Daily use of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, and GPS.
At times, work may be performed in an outdoor environment and may have possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
Driving: Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties.
Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.
Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.
