Description
Under general supervision, leads and performs highly skilled mechanical work related to City vehicles and equipment; and to perform welding and fabrication work as necessary. Exercises technical and functional leadership over lower level staff.
Examples of Duties
Performs a wide variety of vehicle and equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical;
Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel gasoline, electric, natural gas powered equipment and solid waste trucks;
Develops inspection schedule and conducts safety inspections on vehicles and facilities to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations;
Assists with conducting team meetings, training, coaching, and overseeing work order processing;
Assists with planning, assigning, and scheduling of work for lower level mechanics;
Responds to road calls during work hours and call back hours;
Performs electric and oxy-acetylene welding in the fabricating and repair of equipment, structures, tools, and other related parts;
Designs, lays out, and fabricates equipment parts;
Assists other maintenance and mechanical personnel in the performance of complex or emergency duties as necessary;
Generates works orders and tracks worked performed;
Maintains accurate records;
Orders supplies, parts, and materials, and picks up parts as necessary;
Trains personnel as necessary; and
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience:
Four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair.
Education:
Equivalent to a high school diploma.
Specialized training or college level course work in automotive technology or a closely related field is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Commercial driver's license.
Possess and maintain an Airbrake Certificate.
Possess and maintain an Air Conditioning Certificate.
Possess and maintain an appropriate A.S.E. Certificate.
Emergency Vehicle Technician certification is desirable.
Special Requirements:
Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 75 pounds;
Exposure to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
