FACILITIES MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
$16.00 - $24.99 per hour

The City of Mission Viejo seeks qualified candidates to serve as our next Facilities Maintenance Assistant to provide excellent customer service to our residents and staff. Candidates will use basic maintenance and repair equipment, perform custodial functions, replace lights, use standard office equipment, including a computer, and will lift and carry materials & equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Currently, there is one (1) vacancy in the Public Services Department to work at various City facilities. The bi-weekly work schedule may vary on the needs of the City and include working special events. Scheduled hours of work can be any day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. The eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used by the City to fill future Facilities Maintenance Assistant vacancies with different work schedules.
The first round of interviews is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 10, 2024. Only one date will be available for an applicant to attend. The City will not accommodate applicant scheduling requests for alternative dates.
Facilities Maintenance Assistants are considered Hourly, Seasonal, and/or Temporary employees, and are not part of the competitive service. Incumbents will work a flexible part-time schedule, with an average of 12 to 19 hours per week, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during assignments through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th.

Provide the highest of standards of customer service, information, and communication to the public while upholding promoting the policies standards of the Public Services Department.
Assemble and move furniture, equipment and supplies as assigned.
Keep furniture organized and in pre-determined spots.
Fix/repair furniture as needed or notify direct supervisor of needed repairs.
Report any missing or vandalized furniture or infrastructure to direct supervisor.
Perform janitorial and custodial functions for outside furniture, equipment, and facility structures.
Organize assigned City storage facilities.
Report unauthorized persons and other facility security issues.
Open, close, and secure buildings.
Assist Public Services Operations staff as needed.

Your Team The members of the Mission Viejo Public Services Department are diverse in their skills and knowledge and are very passionate about maintaining the City’s infrastructure to the highest of standards. The Public Services Department oversees 14 City facilities, that include commercial type buildings, Recreation Centers, an Animal Services Center and an Aquatics Center. The department also oversees 52 parks and hundreds of acres of open space.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Ability to work a minimum of 12 and up to 19 hours;

Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment.
Basic facility maintenance techniques and materials.

Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and City staff, in person and over the telephone.
Safe driving principles and practices.
Safe work practices.
Skill in:
Cleaning and caring for assigned areas and equipment.

Using and operating a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum cleaner, wet/dry vacuum, carpet extractor, buffer, mop, and broom.

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and those contacted in the course of the work.
Operating a motor vehicle safely.
Experience and Training and License/Certificate
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12) grade supplemented with one (1) year of experience in janitorial or custodial workeither in a paid or volunteer setting.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
