The Principal Gifts Writer is a lead development writer for UCSF’s fundraising team. The incumbent will plan, write, and edit fundraising proposals for UDAR’s high-level donors, vision statements relating to new initiatives and programs at UCSF, concept papers, case statements, and talking points for UDAR and UCSF leadership; write digital and video content; develop strong relationships with many of the world’s leading researchers and clinicians across a wide range of medical and biological science specialties; and conduct interviews, research, and reporting for feature stories and gift stories. The successful candidate will be, above all, an experienced, versatile, and dependable proposal writer, able to write compelling copy under tight deadlines, and equally committed to scientific accuracy and powerful storytelling. It is important that this person has the ability to understand complex scientific information and convey it to a wide variety of audiences. The successful candidate will also be a strong collaborator with diverse stakeholders across the university including faculty leaders, communications colleagues, frontline fundraisers, and others.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).
- Background in science writing and/or experience working in philanthropy setting
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 10+ years directly related work experience as a professional writer in a related field
- Expert knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation and advanced skills to write clear, lively, engaging, compelling and effective copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and the broader public
- Expert knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines
- Expert research and fact verification skills
- Expert interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills
