Job Description Summary |
The Graduate Assistant assists with the advising and development of the undergraduate Student Government Association and recognized student organizations. The Graduate Assistant is a member of the Department of Student Engagement and the Division of Student Affairs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, advising the SGA Senate, SGA Director of Public Relations, SGA Director of Elections, and SGA Director of Justice on projects and addressing any issues that arise. The Graduate Assistant also works with the Student Organizations team to coordinate training and development opportunities for recognized student organizations. |
Responsibilities |
- Work alongside the SGA advisor team to advise SGA’s Senate, including, but not limited to: attending weekly Senate meetings on Fridays from 1-3pm, meeting one-on-one with senators to discuss their initiatives, meeting with Senate committee chairs and/or committees, providing resources/ideas/alternative perspectives to help advance projects
- Develop deep knowledge of SGA’s operating documents, serving as a resource to help them interpret and apply policies as needed, as well as indicating areas where more clarification is needed
- Advise the Director of Justice, including assisting them with Review Board selection, training, and advisement, guiding them through the hearing process, and helping to ensure the branches of SGA are acting consistently with the SGA governing documents
- Advise the Director of Elections in coordinating elections, including assisting them with establishing the election calendar, setting up the ballot, presiding over the Elections Committee, ensuring the Election Code and Procedures are followed, and generally supporting an active and accurate election
- Advise the Director of Public Relations, including supporting and communicating a strong SGA presence on campus, reviewing press releases as needed, and making connections between SGA and other campus marketing outlets
- Act as a liaison between the SGA Allocations Committee and recognized student organizations to ensure that University policies and procedures are followed for events being considered for SGA funding
- Provide opportunities for the development of student organization leadership that nurture organization growth and provide leadership development for organization members, primarily by facilitating President’s Leadership Summit, Executive Board Conference and President’s Meetings.
- Assist student leaders with adhering to University resources, policies, and procedures (for example those related to events procedures, fiscal policy, social media guidelines, and posting policy).
- Maintain positive working relationships with campus partners from academic/administrative departments
- Act as a neutral advisor, offering multiple perspectives and allowing students to make final decisions, except in the case of policy or legal violations
- Attend weekly meetings with supervisor
- Participate in and contribute to Department of Student Engagement programs, services, experiences, and resources as determined by supervisor.

Required Qualifications |
- Enrollment in a Ph.D. or Master’s degree program, preferably focused on leadership development or higher education and student affairs
- Desire to gain knowledge of student development theory and issues relevant to higher education.
- Availability on Fridays during the academic year from 1-3pm
- Previous experience, at the graduate or undergraduate level, with student governance, student organizations, and/or student leadership development preferred.
- Prior experience, at the graduate or undergraduate level, working directly with faculty preferred.
- Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and providing service to students.
- Ability to exercise initiative and work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal skills working with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels, both inside and outside the University. Ability to use tact and diplomacy and to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize duties when faced with interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workload.
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills; strong editing and proofreading skills.
- Must project professional and confident demeanor when delegating and holding others accountable.
- Ability to work 19-hours per week as a student employee on-campus.

Criteria that will be taken into account in our selection process pertain to candidate’s leadership and supervisory experience, experience with and readiness for coordinating and assisting with student co-curricular efforts, capacity for providing autonomous oversight of areas of responsibility (i.e. facilities, programs, and services), enrollment in a graduate program applicable to student affairs, and active pursuit of a career in student affairs. |
