The Water Resources Department has an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to become part of the Water Distribution team as a Meter Technician. The Meter Technician, under general supervision, reads and services water meters and records consumption for approximately 30,000 accounts; identifies water meter equipment problems; performs water meter maintenance; notifies customers of delinquencies; and responds to customer inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
*A primary duty of the Meter Technician includes accurately reading a scheduled meter route, while briskly walking an average of 10 miles per day.*
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Some meter reading experience is desirable.
License or Certificate
- Possession of a Class C driver's license with a good driving record.
- Must obtain a Grade I Water Distribution Certificate within one year of employment.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR, First Aid, and Pepper Spray Certificates within six (6) months of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Read residential, commercial, and industrial water meters using computerized meter reading device; record readings.
Review meter readings to ensure consistency and proper meter registering; report unusual high or low readings to supervisor.
Respond to and resolve customer requests, complaints and inquiries; re-read meters as necessary; deliver delinquent account notices.
Discontinue water services as required; turn off water flow on delinquent accounts.
Check water mains for leaks; repair meter related leaks; notify customers as appropriate.
Replace meter lids and coverings.
Prepare a variety of operational reports related to water meter reading activities.
Operate and maintain City vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner.
Assist with routing of new accounts.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, confining work space, and chemicals; ability to travel to different sites and locations. (For example: this position will include briskly walking an average of 10 miles per day, lifting covers, and bending to read meters).
