Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History
What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.
What you will do at Harris County Public Library:
This position is responsible for the end-to-end customer service experience by connecting customers with the information they seek. Perform circulation tasks and support innovative programs. Demonstrate knowledge on all library operations and deliver an exceptional customer service experience. Exemplify the high standards and expectations for the library system in its daily operations and services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide customer service and manage customer accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events
Assists patrons on computers, answering phones, and assisting with request for assistance
Checking in and delivery of holds, returned items, and new items
Pulling expired holds, shelving returned and new items, running reports, and looking for lost items on the shelves
Basic reference service in the library and during outreach events
Promote library services to the community
Accurately enter data, handle sensitive customer information, and handle cash transactions
Maintain and promote an engaging and attractive library collection
Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences and actively serve on committees

Requirements
Education:
High School diploma or GED equivalency
Experience:
One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience
Additional Information:
Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties
Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED) must be readily available upon request
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Customer service principles promoting positive partnership and public relations
Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
Ability to work well with public and staff members
Cash handling practices ensuring accountability and accuracy
Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a discreet and effective manner
Proficient with Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
Proficient with the Internet and Office 365

This job typically operates in a professional office environment.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
At times, work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.
Physical Demands:
Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying. Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.
