Job Summary
The Nonlinear Photonics Laboratory at Caltech is seeking an experienced Research Technician to support experimental research in integrated photonics. This is a part-time, 20-hour per week position.
Essential Job Duties
Manage equipment and workstations for photonic, electronic, and sample preparation activities in the lab.
Support graduate students and researchers in various activities in an experimental photonics laboratory, including but not limited to:
Setup, operation, and maintenance of optical and electronic equipment.
Preparation of optical samples through polishing, cleaning, annealing, and mounting.
Design, fabrication, and testing of electronic circuits and PCBs.
Fiber splicing, optical alignment, optical test and measurements.
Cleanroom activities, such as SEM, AFM, and plasma cleaning.
Perform other work related to experimental photonics that may arise based on the research needs of the lab.
Maintain an inventory of equipment and components in the lab.
Prepare reports and documents.
Train group members on the above-mentioned activities.
Basic Qualifications
10+ years of experience as a technician in experimental photonics laboratories.
Extensive hands-on experience with lasers, optics, electronics, components and systems.
Extensive experience in photonic sample preparation, handling, and testing.
Extensive hands-on experience with optical and electronic test equipment.
Extensive experience with electronic soldering, optical polishing, and wire bonding.
Cleanroom experience.
Experience using optical microscopes and electron microscopes.
Proficient with Microsoft Office tools.
Excellent organization and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
15+ years of experience in experimental photonics laboratories.
Experience with laboratory management.
Experience with table-top lasers and nonlinear optics experiments and alignment.
