Under the supervision of the Chief of Veterinary, the Veterinarian provides guidance to the customers and utilizes their medical expertise to perform spays or neuters surgeries on dogs and cats prior to being adopted; examines diagnoses, and treats injured and sick sheltered animals; provides for the humane care and disposition of sheltered and quarantined animals; assists in the development and implementation of strategies to increase the “leave alive” rate; participates in planning processes; and provides insight to policy development and program budget.

Duties & Responsibilities
Examines animals and identifies potential ailments such as injuries, health conditions, and behavior issues that need treatment.
Neuters or spay dogs and cats prior to being adopted.
Provides general supervision to technicians performing vaccinations and treatment of animals.
Provides clinical supervision to technicians assisting with surgery.Assists in the development and/or review of sanitation, treatment, and euthanasia protocols.
Assists in the prevention and control of disease in sheltered animals.
Educate clients about the value of preventative care such as heartworm and flea prevention.
Vaccinates pets against rabies and other disease, implants microchips, and performs other veterinary medical procedures.
Work and communicate with other veterinarians and technicians to provide the best medical care.
Responsible for daily evaluation of quarantined animals.

Requirements
Education:
DVM / VMD / or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited School of Veterinary Medicine or will graduate from an accredited school of Veterinary Medicine with a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M./V.M.D.) by hire date.
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners or the ability to obtain a valid veterinary license issued by the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners by the hire date
Experience:
At least six (6) months of surgical experience in spaying and neutering dogs and cats.

Work Environment:
This job operates in an animal shelter, animal clinic, and professional office environment.
Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines as well as medical equipment.
Physical Demands:
Persons in these positions frequently lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs.
They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 20 lbs., and sometimes, but rarely, up to 50 lbs
