The Director of Enterprise Risk Management is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and coordinating risk control, reduction, and prevention programs with the goal of minimizing the risk of injuries and adverse events to the university. This involves development and distribution of training as well as oversight of insurance placement and claims handling.
Duties:
- Provides administrative oversight the Enterprise Risk Management department including hiring, firing, evaluating, training, and supervising assigned personnel to ensure effective departmental operations and compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and rules.
- Creates and develops processes to maximize resources and protect internal reporting information regarding incidents/claims
- Acts as resource for the assigned campus and university regarding risk management and insurance matters; this includes collaborating with other departments on risk related topics (Office of Legal Counsel, Campus Safety, Clery Act Compliance Committee, etc.) on to integrate governance, risk management, and compliance considerations into processes, projects, and other initiatives.
- Creates, develops, and updates risk management training and materials including online training modules for Safe Driver, Youth Protection, International Travel Registry, Research Contracts, etc. This includes sustaining and improving the Risk Management Roadshow as well as quarterly newsletter and targeted contact with each college campus wide.
- Conducts risk assessments, identifies and manages risks to the university, its employees, students, stakeholders, assets and operations and contributes to development of university-wide risk management strategies, objectives and policies that establish the framework, tools and procedures to achieve successful risk identification and management.
- Oversees campus property insurance program consisting of over 350 buildings and develops processes for accurately determining and reporting values of buildings, contents, and computers to ensure adequate insurance coverages and programs and proposes options to leadership on alternatives to maximize value to the institution.
- Provides strategic direction in the development and administration of a comprehensive short- and long-range risk management program to identify, analyze, and respond to risk exposure; establishes and implements short- and long-term goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; evaluates operational effectiveness; and implements changes required for improvement.
- Develops and manages the budget for risk management operational needs as well as the budget for risk financing needs for the campus.
- Develops processes for provider billing and payment guidelines that adhere to campus policies and procedures.
- Provides reports and status updates to leadership and other key stakeholders on risk indicators, industry trends, compliance recommendations, reserve increases, department budgets, and other assigned projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Law, Business or in a related field, AND:
- 10 years in insurance and risk management or related field including 3 years in supervisory or leadership experience.
Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, industry- specific requirements, and state laws with the ability interpret and applying them to business operations
- Knowledge of claim processing
- Ability to assess and prioritize risks, identify control deficiencies, and recommend effective solutions
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Familiarity with Enterprise Risk Management frameworks (ISO 31000 and the COSO Enterprise Risk Management - Integrating with Strategy and Performance)
- Working knowledge and experience in risk management principles and practices
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
- Financial and regulatory knowledge
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Certifications:
- Associates in Risk Management (ARM, ARM-E), RIMS-CRMP or CRM) or obtain within the first year of employment
Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Long periods of time sitting and/or standing in front of a computer.
- Occasional Travel up to 10%.
Departmental Preferences:
- MBA or similar advanced graduate degree with a business or risk management focus, Juris Doctorate
- Risk management in higher education or public entity organizations, Compliance program oversight, Project Management
