The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs.
The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation, Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Automotive/Equipment Mechanic III to lead and and perform the full range of difficult skilled mechanical work on a variety of gasoline, diesel, and electric-powered vehicles and power equipment. In addition, perform other related duties, as assigned.
This position is in the Southern Region Parks Division, and depending on programmatic needs, this position may report to garages located at Cosca (Clinton, MD), Bock Road (Ft. Washington), and Watkins Regional Park (Upper Marlboro).
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday from 6:00 am -2:45 pm
Budgeted Hiring Range: $54,452 to $75,446 (growth potential to $96,439). Salary commensurate with experience
Examples of Important Duties
Plans work. Assigns work orders for mechanical projects. Troubleshoots and determines the cause of equipment malfunction to identify the type and extent of necessary repairs. Conducts technical research.
Work closely with the Trade Shop Supervisor to ensure all park maintenance is performed to the highest standards.
Supervise, train, and develop employees in the auto mechanic field. • Evaluate and counsel employee’s performance in compliance with Commission policy.
Completes required administrative paperwork and record-keeping associated with service requests and inventory.
Maintains files and records pertinent to employee's work performance and attendance.
Strongly enforce all OSHA/MOSHA rules to ensure a safe work environment.
Performs difficult mechanical work. Performs major repairs on cars, trucks, and other equipment. Major repairs include rebuilding, changing, aligning, and modifying components and assemblies of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles (e.g., engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, axles, etc.) by fitting and installing parts needed (e.g., valves, pistons, gears, bearings, cylinders, etc.) to exacting tolerances, clearances, and specifications. Connects, meshes, aligns, and adjusts systems to ensure proper operation. Repairs electrical, mechanical, exhaust, fuel, lubrication, cooling, hydraulic, electronic, and computer utility system malfunctions.
Replaces or overhauls brake and fuel systems, generators, alternators, starters, distributors, and electronic ignition systems. Rebuilds and replaces brakes, lights, horns, belts, hoses, shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rods, mufflers, fuel pumps, and other parts. Cleans and paints equipment. Replaces broken parts.
Performs quality control for repairs and preventive maintenance on vehicles and other equipment.
Changes oil, filters, and fluids. Lubricates moving parts. Replace or charge batteries. Inflates, balances, changes, and rotate tires. Adjusts brakes and clutches and tunes up engines. Repairs vehicle emissions systems.
Assigns and maintains an inventory of power equipment, tools, safety equipment, and vehicles.
Drives motor vehicles to carry workers and haul tools, equipment, materials, and supplies. Loads and unloads tools, equipment, supplies, and materials. Set up tools and equipment. Tows vehicles and equipment to the garage for repairs.
Reports for weather-related emergencies.
Assigns and checks the work of other Mechanics, Trades workers, and part-time general maintenance workers who provide support. Provides instructions and assists with training on proper procedures, methods, and safety.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Completion of an approved automotive/equipment mechanical apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair on automotive and/or heavy motor equipment.
Four (4) years of experience at the journey level, including two (2) years of experience directing the activities of other skilled Automotive/Equipment Mechanics.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total eight (8) years.
Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
Pass Commission medical examination.
