Position Information
The Department of Environmental Services (DES), Solid Waste Bureau is seeking an experienced Trades Worker III to work with a team that performs street, can, and litter collection, including bus shelter repair and maintenance, and basic cleanliness and landscaping functions.
Specific duties include:
Performing litter control, bus shelter cleaning and graffiti removal by using hands, pressure washer and vacuum collection methods;
Operating a standard pickup truck with and without a trailer, and may operate a commercial rear loader trash truck for collecting street cans, and/or operating other specialized commercial vehicles;
Reading a map and operating a GPS unit to navigate to various locations throughout Arlington County;
Using a tablet to record time and input information related to daily tasks; and
Attending meetings and trainings;
This employee will also perform other duties related to the overall mission of the Solid Waste Bureau including:
Assisting in programs supported by the Operations section of the Solid Waste Bureau, including operating a leaf vacuum truck during leaf season;
Working during snow events or emergencies, supporting County special events and activities, and maintaining the cleanliness and service of vehicles; and
Using a portable weighing scale for collection of daily data.
Selection Criteria
MINIMUM:
Six (6) months' experience performing general labor functions; and
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
DESIRABLE: Preference may be given to candidates with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and experience in one or more of the following:
Operating a rear loader trash truck;
Performing landscaping functions; and/or
Entering data into computers and/or tablets.
Special Requirements
1) The selected applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or they must provide a copy of the official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
2) Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
3) The successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening, and will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as legally required.
4) Employee will be required to follow all applicable Federal, State, and County safety requirements when performing duties. The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease and dirt with extended periods of sitting, bending, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment, weighing up to 50 pounds.
5) Pre-employment records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, references, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
Work Hours:
7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Employee must be available for call-back and/or to respond to emergency debris calls and other emergency situations.
Employees will be required to work overtime as needed and may also be required to work some holidays and Saturdays.
Mandatory overtime is required during fall leaf season (beginning around November through the end of December) to include 10 hours per day, 6 days per week, up to 10 hours on Saturdays, and during snow emergencies.
