Position Information
The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a high performing, technically competent Training Specialist to join our team within the Water, Sewer, and Streets (WSS) Bureau. This position supports the bureau’s technical training and certification needs by managing the administration of training events. Responsibilities include maintaining the training and certification system in our Learning Management System (LMS) and scheduling, coordinating, and setting up trainings. This Specialist is also responsible for tracking training purchase orders (POs).
Specific duties include:
Managing time, setup, certification and attendance for trainings to include logging information into LMS, ensuring that exams are administered appropriately;
Performing data entry, organization, manipulation and analysis to independently troubleshoot and resolve training-related questions or system issues;
Generating reports and/or written narratives concerning employee progress and maintaining calendar updates for training calendar;
Effectively collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that all Career Path training information is captured, well organized and/or input into the LMS on a regular basis;
Attending scheduled Career Path collaboration sessions (all other identified LMS-related training events) to enhance knowledge of the system; and
Researching training options – soliciting agreements/contracts with external companies for relevant training and obtaining approval for Purchase Orders for new training.
The successful candidate will possess demonstrated skills in technology, communication, organization & time management, and data analysis including:
Experience using a Learning Management System with the ability to create and maintain training instances in system, log certifications for internal and external trainings and accomplishments, and generate reports;
Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate trainings with vendors, management, supervisors and employees and to provide reports or narratives related to employee progress;
Strong organizational and time management skills to manage bureau records in an easy-to-access manner and manage multiple projects concurrently in a structured and organized manner; and
Analytical skills to identify trends, make recommendations and identify areas for possible process improvement.
Selection Criteria
Minimum:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent;
Considerable experience performing administrative support functions or duties directly related to training or administration.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year for year basis.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree in public administration or related field and/or experience in one or more of the following:
Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel);
Using SharePoint list management, Power Apps and Microsoft Forms and Oracle applications; and/or
Performing complex problem solving including identifying areas for process improvement and recommending solutions.
Special Requirements
The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
The pay ranges listed above are effective June 30, 2024.
Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the possibility for some telework opportunities with approval. Occasional work hours outside of normal schedule may be required based on training schedule and emergency requirements. Employee must be available for call-back in emergency situations and during snow removal season. This position is considered emergency personnel.
