Examples of Duties
Job Purpose Under general supervision is responsible for planning and coordinating an environmental health program. Supervises, schedules and approves assigned work of professional and subprofessional subordinates.
Essential Job Duties
Plans, coordinates, supervises and reviews the work of Sanitarians in food protection, community hygiene, water quality, sanitary engineering, health care facilities or other environmental health program.
Performs technical review of architectural plans for food establishments, public swimming pools, health care facilities, and solid and hazardous waste facilities.
Interprets environmental laws and regulations to public and other County agencies.
Directs or conducts sanitary surveys, studies and field inspections.
Acts as a consultant to a group of Environmental Health Specialists on complex environmental health problems.
Prepares and presents testimony relative to enforcement of Federal, State, and local regulations.
Examples of Other Duties:
Conducts training and educational programs for new personnel in environmental health, other institutions and interested groups.
Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a physical, biological natural resource, or environmental health science, engineering or agriculture or registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland: Plus Four years' experience in environmental or public health sanitation.
Education beyond a bachelor's degree in one of the areas listed may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles of environmental health
Thorough knowledge of the concepts and objectives of environmental sanitation programs
Comprehensive knowledge of the physical, biological and natural resource sciences
Thorough knowledge of Federal and State environmental laws and regulations
Basic computer and software skills
Skill in conducting sanitary surveys, studies and field investigations
Skill in plans review to assess environmental impact
Skill in interpreting codes and regulations
Skill in effective communication both orally and written
Ability to serve as a consultant and explain complex specialized and technical information
Ability to testify in court
Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of subordinate professional personnel
Licenses and Certificates Possession of a valid license to legally operate any class of vehicle or equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position is required at the time of appointment.
Current registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland is required at the time of application.

Conditions of Employment
Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

Physical and Environmental Conditions The work of these positions requires some physical activity such as walking, bending, stooping, and carrying of moderately heavy objects. Field investigations may involve exposure to inclement weather.
