I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Office of Enrollment and Student Success (ESS) is a mission-driven organization providing a cohesive experience throughout all phases of the student lifecycle, from the admissions and enrollment process through graduation and beyond, by supporting a connected, comprehensive, and student-centered approach to the student experience. An integral component to ESS, the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) administers over $470 million in financial aid (institutional grants and federal loans combined) to undergraduate and graduate students, and is responsible for ensuring adherence to federal, state, and institutional regulations relating to student financial aid.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Director, Student Financial Assistance, the Financial Aid Counselor assists in the administration of federal, state, and institutional student aid programs for a diverse population of traditional and non-traditional students. Primary duties include:
Financial Aid Processing
Reviews financial aid applications for completion
Enters document into PC22System for review
Partners with the Student Services Hub to provide customer service
Monitors and processes outside scholarship checks
Provides financial aid counseling to students and parents regarding GW application procedures, timelines, and eligibility requirements
Advises students and/or parents on the disbursement of aid, billing, and loan processing
Escalates financial aid inquiries to the appropriate Senior Financial Aid counselor
Informs students/parents of outstanding issues and offers solutions for resolution
Answers general questions and resolves student concerns and other third parties as it relates to student financial assistance and account/billing
Directs students/parents to the relevant information on the OSFA website compliance
Demonstrates understanding of federal and state-level laws to ensure compliance
Identifies financial aid questions, issues, and concerns as they relate to compliance
Communications
Communicates in a respectful tone and manner with students and families
Communicates appropriate information to other OSFA departments in a timely manner
Writes clearly and accurately in a variety of contexts
Actively listens and conveys information effectively to others
Data Management
Demonstrates numerical literacy
Accurately documents sources of information in different GW online systems
Uses GW online systems in the Office of Financial Aid to process and find information
Utilizes Federal and State agency online data management systems to troubleshoot student questions
The position is based at GW’s Virginia Science & Technology Campus in Ashburn, VA. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 3 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
