The practice of a Physician Assistant shall include medical services within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that are delegated by the supervising physician.
Responsibilities may also include overseeing completion and submission of routine and special reports.
Medical services rendered by physician assistants may include, but are not limited to, obtaining patient histories and performing physical examinations; ordering and/or performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; formulating a diagnosis; developing and implementing a treatment plan; monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions; assisting at surgery; offering counseling and education to meet patient needs; making appropriate referrals.
The activities listed above may be performed in any setting authorized by the supervising physician, including but not limited to, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and other institution settings.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The clinician's responsibilities include working with all clinical staff at Montefiore, including office staff, preoperative clinical staff as well as staff on the unit, as well as patient's and their family members
- The clinician will communicate with Internal Medicine/Comanagement physicians as well as communicate with patient's physicians within or outside the Montefiore system, as well as office staff, to coordinate and obtain pertinent health information as needed to assess and medically clear each patient for surgery
- The clinician will be responsible for teaching, regarding preoperative education when needed
- The clinician will be responsible for performance improvement and research activities,, maintaining professional practice standards and clinical expertise, and demonstrate leadership skills. The clinician will demonstrate core and unit specific competencies, based on the patient population served
- The clinician contributes to the actualization of the philosophy and objectives of the department of orthopedic surgery, and the Montefiore Center for joint replacement surgery. They participate in performance improvement and research activities, and maintains professional practice standards and clinical expertise
- The clinician will assist the medical team in performing complete preoperative medical evaluations for patients who will be undergoing orthopedic surgery. This will include physical assessment , ordering specific lab tests, interpretation of lab data, assessment of patient's current medications, as well as recommendations for any changes of medication therapy preoperative. The clinician/coordinator will understand and utilize guidelines that will insure patient's safety for surgical procedures and anesthesia. The clinician must be self directed and semi-autonomous.
- Participate in the department's performance improvement activities. Navigate multi-disciplinary staff through established process improvement initiatives using proper methodologies..
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred
- Valid Physician Assistant Certification and NYS License
- Physical assessment skills, EMR proficiency
- Ability to treat medically complex patients, both pre-operatively and post-operatively.
- Managing multiple schedules simultaneously.
- Coordinating and reconciling patient care with outside clinical entities.
- Prioritizing care based on clinical needs of patients (inpatient and outpatient)
