Job Summary Teacher will be teaming with another sixth grade teacher. Both teachers (in the pair/team) will instruct students in both sixth grade classes. Position is responsible for teaching in the district’s 50-50 dual language program and supporting the growth of the program. The teacher is responsible for creating a dual language immersion (Spanish) classroom environment that ensures learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to prove a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil’s ability; and to establish good relationships with families and with other staff members. Position will provide standards-based instruction in Spanish in content areas with another teacher providing instruction in English. Fifty percent of the students will be native Spanish speakers and fifty percent will be native English speakers.
The Teacher is prepared to:
Deliver district curriculum using strategies conducive to dual-language immersion, such as sheltered instruction, cooperative learning, and discovery learning.
Understand the core purposes of dual immersion program and research behind the program’s effectiveness.
Work cooperatively with colleagues to ensure continuity between daily Spanish and English instruction.
Document children’s growth in first and second languages.
Plan and implement curriculum activities based on the development levels of each child in the classroom.
Organize and maintain the classroom environment, focusing on materials to enhance the development of two languages.
Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
Prepare classroom books, based on family information, children’s interests and ongoing classroom projects.
Maintain records on children’s growth and development and sharing information with parents during parent conferences.
Work cooperatively with students and their parents who are culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse.
Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
Maintain professional competence through in-service Professional Learning activities.
Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in fulfilling teacher evaluation procedures and actively seek for and participate in professional growth opportunities to reflect and improve practice as a highly effective dual language teacher.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Other Duties:
Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after-school activities.
Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
Minimum Requirements:
Bilingual in Spanish and English including reading, writing, and speaking
Experience teaching in bilingual setting
At least one year of full-time teaching experience; working with diverse student populations, preferred
Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students
Ability to read, interpret, and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
Records maintenance skills
