SUMMARY
Under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement, Heluna Health and the Occupational Health Branch (OHB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for a Research Associate II (50% FTE)) to assist the Occupational Health Branch COVID Team with data collection, processing and presentation in an occupational health context.
The OHB COVID-19 Team is building data sources for analysis of occupational exposures and illness due to COVID-19. The Research Associate II will join the team under the general supervision of the Chief of the Hazard Evaluation Service and Information System (HESIS) and COVID-19 Team Lead. Other OHB COVID-19 Epidemiology Team members include clinicians and other staff with epidemiology/data skills at different levels, working together on various projects.
The Research Associate II’s duties include tracking, requesting, reviewing, abstracting and coding, and processing medical records, physician reports, and other physical and electronic data sources for inclusion in public health surveillance efforts. The Research Associate II also enters standardized coded data, conducts quality control and other data management and processing, and helps to prepare data for presentation such as graphs and tables. Duties also include contributing to morbidity and mortality case follow-up and data collection, distributing protocols and guidance for workers in a variety of contexts, data entry and cleaning, and other duties required to collaborate with and support the epidemiology team.
The hourly range for this position is $36.14 to $39.00 per hour depending on experience/ qualifications.
This position is grant funded through 6/30/2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Track, request, code, and process medical records, hard-copies of physician reports and other sources of occupational COVID data
- Perform data entry, quality control, and/or processing of information from morbidity and mortality case follow-up
- Assist with distribution of results, as well as distribution of guidance and protocols for worker safety and infection prevention
- Other duties to support the epidemiology team
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of related experience
- Experience and familiarity with industry and occupation coding schema
- Skills in medical chart abstraction
- Attention to detail
- Competence with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office applications, including Access
- Familiarity with medical terminology a plus
- Experience in research or public health a plus
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Good judgment and ability to think logically
- Ability to work both remotely and in the CDPH Richmond, CA office
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required; Master’s degree in public health or related field, preferred
- At least one year of research experience with occupational data abstraction, required.
- Knowledge of data systems such MS Access, a plus
- Knowledge of occupational exposure and health, a plus.

- Knowledge of and skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Power Point, and remote technologies such as Zoom and MS Teams.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is currently a remote/hybrid position with the possibility of occasional in-person work at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Richmond, CA.
This position may be required to travel up to 10% for in-person meetings. Supervisor/leadership will determine work schedule.
Must have functioning internet access at remote location.
