Under direct supervision, organizes and assists with recreation activities as part of a broad program of community recreation, park, and leisure services; and performs related duties as required.
Essential Functions

Participates in and leads community services programs and activities such as youth sports, arts and crafts, camps, tiny tots, senior social services, and special events; assists with supervision in absence of Community Services Coordinator.
Officiates games, tournaments, and sports programs; demonstrates skills and explains rules; keeps score.
Plans, organizes, and provides oversight for day camp and other activities and assists in the transport and monitoring of participants and supplies for City-sponsored excursions.
Holds meetings and open house events for parents and provides information regarding programs and children.
Teaches lesson plans and craft activities for Tiny Tots Program; keeps records and files for each child; supervises activities to ensure safe environment; assists with cleanup given bathroom training accidents.
Demonstrates proper skills and techniques for different sports and community activities.
Reports maintenance and equipment repair needs to Community Services Coordinator.
Prepares participant attendance and activity records and attends staff meetings, as needed.
Assists with furniture arrangement, equipment set-up, and room set-ups.
Observes safety and City rules and regulations; ensures park and facility users are aware of rules and regulations.
Assists at special events by monitoring activities and providing general information.
Provides front counter supervision as needed; answers phones, refers callers, assists clients, takes registrations, and performs other tasks.
Qualifications Guidelines
Knowledge of: Recreation: Common sports such as baseball, football, volleyball, and basketball; equipment and skills; safety standards and requirements. Crafts and arts: Programs and activities involving arts, crafts, and other specialized activities. Child development: Child development activities, services, and programs. All positions: Record keeping, filing, and reporting techniques, arithmetic and basic computer applications.
Ability to: Understand and apply facility use policies and procedures; provide and administer basic first aid; complete attendance and activity records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain facilities and equipment in a clean and safe manner; effectively work and communicate with facility patrons and program participants; use computer hardware and word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Education/Training/Experience: High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required. One year of community services leadership, volunteer services, or related experience is required.
For Tiny Tots assignments, completion of at least three child care units is desirable.
Licenses, Certificates; Special Requirements: American Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification. Tuberculosis (TB) certification from the California Department of Public Health.
Depending upon position assignment, a valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
May be required to work a varied schedule of hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of La Puente employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, or walk; talk or hear, in person and by telephone. Lifting, straightening, and moving tables and chairs and/or equipment to arrange facilities for special events and/or meetings. Depending upon the position assignment, the employee is expected to demonstrate skills and participate in or lead sports and events. The employee may occasionally lift, move, and carry objects typically weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee must be able to physically lift, push, pull, and/or carry materials and equipment used for special events weighing up to 50 pounds. Depending upon position assignment, employee may be expected to mop, sweep and clean areas to ensure a safe environment for children. Sensory demands include the ability to see within normal range, ability to use close vision and adjust focus, and talk, and hear, and use electronic touch keypads.
Mental Demands While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; work with frequent interruptions; and interact with staff, management, contract instructors, vendors, the public, and others encountered in the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The employee works in both office and field settings, and occasional travel is required to different community centers, events, as well as user group and public meeting sites. In the office setting, the noise level is frequently moderate, and typically below 70 decibels. In field settings, the employee is occasionally exposed to loud noise during sporting and recreational activities which exceeds 80 decibels. The employee works under variable weather conditions at different sites and events.
