About the Job Sandy Spring Bank is currently recruiting for a Home Equity Underwriter. Following established policies and procedures, this position underwrites home equity loans through use of the consumer loan origination system (LOS). Ensure that each loan complies with established Sandy Spring Bank Credit Policy and Consumer Underwriting Guidelines. Determines appropriate loan structure commensurate to the risks identified. This position is cross-trained in all phases of consumer underwriting and processing activities and is expected to assist in meeting departmental objectives during peak periods and staffing shortages. Also expected to assist with management of the pipeline as well as development and improvement of processes and procedures. Works with basic, as well as, more complex consumer loans. Provides guidance in interpretation of loan policies and procedures to staff as well as other departments throughout the bank. MAJOR JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: Underwriting: Using sound judgement, and demonstrating a complete and in-depth understanding of SSB Credit Policy, as well as credit underwriting principles, underwrites home equity loan applications received from loan officers throughout the Bank and directly from the client through the online portal. Performs analysis of credit reports and complex financial information provided by borrower to verify income. Maintains established standards for turnaround of loan decisions. Seeks assistance, as needed, for unusual situations. Contacts loan officer as needed, for additional information or clarification. Demonstrates complete understanding and knowledge of Regulatory requirements as it relates to consumer lending. Pipeline Management: Responsible for application monitoring of loans prior to credit approval within the consumer LOS. Continuous monitoring of pipeline to distribute work and maintain service level standards. Participation in bi-weekly pipeline discussion with Retail managers from the credit perspective. Assists with the portfolio reviews of overrides, turndowns, and approvals under the direction of the Consumer Loan Originations Manager. Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and promptly documents and communicates loan decisions to the loan officer. Loan decisions are rendered and communicated within the prescribed regulatory timeframe. Portfolio Management: Assists with maintenance of the consumer loan origination system and general loan knowledge training for branches and Client Service Center. Approves subordination requests within SLA upon receipt of service request in CX360, then notifies the documentation team that the package is ready for documentation. Daily approval of payments on uncollected funds. Required Skills KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Position requires a professional level of knowledge equivalent to a bachelor's degree level in a banking related field such as finance, accounting, or business administration. Strong knowledge of lending principles and related compliance issues required. Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in lending and credit analysis; Situations require operational knowledge of various departments and familiarity with traditional financial analysis techniques. Strong knowledge of loan origination processes. Position requires regular internal and external contacts to resolve problems and answer complex questions regarding policy and procedure which requires sensible judgment and good interpersonal skills. Appropriate interpersonal skills are necessary to represent the Bank professionally and maintain a positive rapport within the organization. Must be able to work on several loan applications simultaneously while meeting established deadlines as required. Accuracy and attention to detail are required as errors may be serious and not subject to direct verification. This position makes decisions with the framework of practices, policies and procedures and/or precedents that are well defined. Incumbent establishes own priorities. Supervision is generally indirect and work is typically reviewed after the fact. Work requires a high level of mental effort and visual attention. Work involves complex applications where the work is performed under close limits of accuracy and may be accompanied by time pressure. SPECIFIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires reasonable mobility in and around the work area. Ability to use standard computer and phone systems is required WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal office environment where there is almost no discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or other disagreeable elements.
