JOB INFORMATION
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) recognizes the critical importance of engaging with the diverse communities it serves. We are seeking a dedicated individual to strengthen these connections and enhance communication among all stakeholders. In this role, you will coordinate and attend meetings, facilitate communication between Community Relations Officers at area commands, Community Liaison Officers across the department, and the Department Command Staff. Additionally, you will manage the Chief’s Advisory Boards, including scheduling and facilitating meetings, and contribute to the Police Chief’s Executive Committee. Your efforts will be vital in fostering a strong connection between the SDPD and the communities we serve, ensuring effective dialogue and collaboration.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Engage with the community daily, focusing on specific groups such as LGBTQ+, Hispanic, Jewish, and Arabic communities. Address concerns, enhance transparency between the community and SDPD, and relay information to the Police Chief.
Meet with various groups monthly to improve communication between the police department and the communities.
Attend community meetings and serve on committees or boards as a representative of the Police Department. Report issues and important communications to the Police Chief.
Ensure commitments are fulfilled with community leaders through follow-up and follow-through with actions.
Develop and design program brochures, bulletins, newsletters, and news releases.
Compile, prepare, and analyze data for reports.
Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for events as needed.
Prepare and process program contracts and agreements, providing unit budget information.
Collaborate with community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, civic groups, service clubs, schools, youth organizations, and other groups to enhance communication and relationships. Create and deliver frequent community education and information presentations to promote citizen awareness of crime prevention activities.
Assist in the research, formulation, and development of new crime prevention programs.
Work with outside vendors in creating, editing, and packaging SDPD videos.
Must be able to work weekends and nights to meet departmental and community needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Public Policy, Public Administration, Communication, or a related field
Minimum of 5 years of direct professional experience and/or cumulative experiences.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Strong administrative and organizational abilities
Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations from various backgrounds
Adaptable and able to navigate ambiguity with ease
Capable of representing the SDPD in interactions with the media, handling news coverage, and addressing legislative matters; on-camera experience is a plus
