Under the management of the Child Life Manager and the clinical direction of the internship coordinator and supervisors, the child life intern engages in a 600-hours, 15-week full time learning experience as required by the Child Life Certification Commission (CLCC). The intern develops the skills used by certified child life specialists to provide direct patient care utilizing developmentally appropriate preparation, support, therapeutic interventions, medical play, advocacy, and emotional support to promote positive coping during health care experiences, reducing stress and anxiety and minimize the negative impact of trauma, hospitalization, and illness. The child life intern develops skills used by certified child life specialists to enhance quality of patient care through participation, documentation, and communication with other members of the health care team as it relates to the developmental and psychosocial needs of children and families in the hospital setting. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.
