Responsibilities
Perform a wide variety of microbiology, clinical microbiology and molecular biology procedures and techniques which may include, but are not limited to: microbiological culture, clinical/diagnostic microbiology, DNA/RNA analysis, DNA/RNA isolation, DNA/RNA purification, DNA/RNA sequencing, manipulation of radioactive isotopes, peptide synthesis, protein analysis, qRT-PCR, germ free RNA and DNA isolation, and cell culture.
Isolate microbes from clinical and/or environmental samples.
Generate laboratory records to support laboratory research, and independently perform necessary calculations (e.g., serial dilutions, molar concentrations, etc.).
Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the Federal Task Leader (FTL) as part of the planning process for subsequent studies, and present these findings in individual weekly meetings with FTL as well as lab group meetings.
Keep up with scientific literature for new methods and procedures that may be considered for application or modification to selected experiments.
Keep daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks; make minor modifications or adaptations to established methods, procedures, and/or techniques to solve problems in the work.
Write reports of findings, state methods and procedures, include any modifications employed, specimens, and materials involved, and results of experiments. Assist with manuscript preparation.
Culture unique clinical microbes including fungi, obligate anaerobic bacteria, and viruses at the BSL-2 level using various techniques including use of a hypoxic chamber.
Maintain laboratory and culture cleanliness and sterility through orderly work habits and strong aseptic technique.
Provide support in Next-Generation Sequencing projects.
Provide expertise in Shotgun Metagenomic sequencing, RNA sequencing, and 16s rRNA sequencing.
Develop and write new programs for scientific instruments.
Assist with the Federal Task Leader with tracking the date/time of experiments and results.
Develop and write scientific protocols.
Maintain and manage human specimen records.
Oversee biobanking of various samples, including human samples.
Maintain detailed records of experiments and their results and prepare the information for publication and reports.
Prepare various buffers, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory.
Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests and analyses.
Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, etc. required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc.
Qualifications
BS/BA degree in related field is required.
Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in a laboratory setting is required.
Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
Effective communication skills working in a team atmosphere.
Professional verbal and written communication.
Ability and willingness to work on a team.
