Position Overview:
A Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is responsible for daily operations of the assigned department(s), such as Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, or POCT, providing diagnostic testing service to inpatient, outpatient or other clients requested by physicians. The Lead CLS is also responsible for scheduling, training, monitoring QC/QA, performance improvement, and participating in performance evaluation of the lab staff members, including CLS's, and CLT's assigned to the department(s). The incumbent may supervise both technical and non-technical employees, and supports the Laboratory Director and other members of the lab management team in achieving the goals of the department as well as those of the Eden Medical Center.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Acquires and maintains current knowledge of the departments, assigned that is essential to provide quality service to the laboratory clients.
Plans, coordinates, and manages the department’s daily operation, monthly activities (QA/QC/PI), and annual programs (such as CAP surveys and Joint Commission survey or periodic performance review).
Assures that all required documentation, especially department’s policies and procedures, is complete, current and easily accessible to the appropriate personnel. Works with the Medical Directors to review, revise, or approve policies or procedures.
Ensures all policies and procedures are in compliance with the Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements, and the department is at ready status for unannounced inspection at all times.
Trains new employees, including CLS or CLT, hired or assigned to work in the department. Assures all employees are properly trained before working in the department independently. Identifies needs and assures that all employees in the department receive regular in-service and education. Provides support and consultation to the staff as needed.
Reviews QC data and submit to the Medical Director weekly, biweekly, or monthly (depending on the department assigned) as well as all CAP survey results when available.
Evaluates and documents competency of the department employees periodically and assures that they are able to perform their job duties proficiently and meet the established turnaround time standards. Provides input for perform annual performance evaluation of the employees working in the department.
Monitors and orders supplies and ensure efficient utilization.
Participates in long term planning for the laboratory operations. Supports the organization’s effort to improve patient satisfaction.
Works closely with other Lead CLS’s and the Lab Directors to maintain smooth operation of the laboratory. Supports the organization’s effort to enhance employee’s experience at work.
Interacts with physicians and medical staff to support their needs for prompt and efficient patient care. Accessible to the clinicians and laboratory staff for consultation either on-site, by phone or via electronic means.
Be a good role model for the staff members. Maintain a good attendance record, adhering to Eden Medical Center Attendance Policy.
Participates in Sutter technical workgroup meetings.
EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
Bachelor's: BA/BS degree with emphasis in Medical Technology or Biochemistry/ Biological Science
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE
CLSL-Licensed Clinical Lab Scientist
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:
Five years of working experience as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
In-depth knowledge of the operation of assigned department(s).
Prior knowledge of computerized laboratory information system is highly desirable.
Demonstrates the ability to plan, coordinate, direct and evaluate the departmental operation.
Demonstrates good interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, staff, and physicians.
Works effectively as a team member.
Demonstrates the ability to work independently to solve problems and willingness to share information with other patient care teams. Has the ability to accept or initiate, implement, and evaluate changes.
