JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs duties at journeyman-level mechanic in the maintenance and repair of buses, trucks, automobiles, tractors, mowers, small equipment and related machinery; may supervise helpers at a low level; must be available for off hours, weekends and emergency calls. Performs other work as required.

Type of position: 12 month, 100% Classified Bargaining Unit position
Salary: Range 24 on the Classified Bargaining Unit Salary Schedule ($4,465.41 - $5,427.73 monthly)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The outcome of the Skilled Maintenance Specialist Heavy Duty Auto Mechanic’s job performance will be as follows:
Parts and supplies on District equipment will have been maintained, repaired, and replaced.
Engines on all equipment will have been tuned.
Engines on all equipment will have been overhauled.
Carburetors, diesel injectors will have been repaired or replaced.
Steering systems will have been repaired.
Spring and suspension systems will have been repaired.
Will have welded and/or repaired as needed.
Will have performed transmission and differential repairs.
Electrical systems will have been repaired.
Diesel engines will have been maintained and ordered.
Parts for repairs will have been maintained and ordered.
Other work, as required, will have been performed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of the following experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered. Relevant training and experience would include:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Experience: Four (4) years of journeyman-level mechanic in addition to completion of an apprenticeship or its equivalent.
SPECIAL LICENSE/REQUIREMENTS:
Possess and maintain a valid California operator’s license to operate District vehicles as determined by the District and liability insurance carrier.
Must provide own hand tools
Knowledge:
Specifications; standard practices, materials and equipment used in the trade; applicable municipal and state codes.
Ability to: Work from specifications; safely lift and carry tools and materials; carry out oral and written instructions; work effectively with others.

Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations. The eligibility list for this classification will remain in effect for a period of 6 months.
