Position Information
The Department of Human Services Public Health Services Division is seeking an experienced Public Health Physician toassess the risk of exposures and/or outcomes which put individuals and/or the community at risk and recommend mitigation strategies or countermeasures. The Physician will provide trusted information to the community to make informed decisions based on risk communication principles.
This position will combine medical, public health and epidemiological expertise to help create appropriate communication for individuals and/or populations at risk for adverse exposures and outcomes. These exposures and/or outcomes risk assessments occur in the following realms: communicable disease, environmental health, homeland security and/or social determinants of health.
Specific duties include:
Provides leadership of population-focused public health protection and preparedness and response programs, includes assessing or helping staff to assess exposure and outcome risk, and available mitigation strategies;
Ensures that medical and epidemiological assessments and Emergency Preparedness and Response plans are population focused and consistent with best practices;
Evaluates exposure and outcome risk assessments pertaining to the nexus of medical, public health and epidemiological lenses;
Creates and/or updates materials consistent with CDC Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication recommendations balancing the principles of “being first, being right, and being credible” to gain the trust of the various populations in Arlington;
Integrates the Department’s vision, mission, and values for Staff, which includes ensuring an equity approach consistent with Destination 2027 and the County Equity resolution is applied and consistent with the best available local epidemiological data;
Serves, as needed, as Acting Health Director and spokesperson for the County regarding public health issues including emergencies; and
Serving, as needed, as Acting Medical Director to include staffing clinics and providing direct patient care.

Selection Criteria
Minimums:
Graduation with an M.D Degree;
Completion of an internship;
Completion of a three-year residency; and
Must obtain and maintain a state medical license.
Desirables: Preference may also be given to candidates with a master's degree in public health and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:
Public health or community health at the local level;
Involving diverse populations and clients with low incomes and/or disabilities;
Testing and treatment of tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infections; and
Public health and health equity advocacy experience.
Special Requirements

A pre-hire background check will be required. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Must complete a State of Virginia Central Registry Check. Completion of the Commonwealth of Virginia Statement of Economic Interest form will be required upon hire.
Some positions will require travel around Arlington County for various meetings and field inspections. Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some flexibility and telework available. Public health staff may be required to work weekends and/or irregular hours during public health emergencies.
This position is identified as Essential Personnel and must be available to work during unscheduled leave, County closures, weekends, evening, holidays, and County disasters; during emergencies, may be assigned to an alternate work site or set of duties including responding to the County Emergency Operations Center.
