About This Role: This position is part of a team of employees responsible for the safe and efficient operation of roll-off trucks and other heavy commercial vehicles such as water truck and rubber tire loader. The job requires traveling on both high-traffic public roads and internal roadways at County facilities. This position will be assigned to the County Landfill and will report directly to a Crew Supervisor and the Assistant Solid Waste Superintendent.
Responsibilities in this job may include, but are not limited to:
Prepare, load, and transport roll-off and other types of large containers from collection sites to the County Landfill, Compost Facility, or other locations in accordance with established standards and regulatory requirements;
Safely operate commercial vehicles such as a roll-off truck, water truck, and rubber tire loader in close proximity to other commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and private trucks and vehicles to complete assigned tasks in all weather conditions;
Perform vehicle and equipment inspections and minor preventative maintenance;
Write and maintain accurate and timely logs, records, and reports;
Read, understand, and abide by all transportation and safety regulations and other applicable requirements, policies, and procedures pertaining to the assigned work;
Assist with site cleanliness; and
Follow supervisor’s direction, work as a team, and communicate effectively and respectfully with coworkers and the public at all times.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum 8th-grade education is required.
Minimum 1 year of full-time experience operating a commercial roll-off truck is required.
Possession of a valid Virginia Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for this position.
Preferences:
High school diploma is preferred.
Minimum 3 years of full-time experience operating a commercial roll-off truck is preferred.
Minimum 3 years of full-time experience working in the solid waste industry is preferred.
Special Requirements:
Driving Requirement: This job requires having and maintaining a valid Virginia Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License and is subject to routine alcohol and drug testing and driving record checks.
Essential Service Requirement: This position is an essential employee. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations before or after regular working hours, including on holidays and weekends, is required.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirement: This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat.
Physical Requirement: This job requires lifting up to 75 pounds, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work is generally performed outside and may be exposed to vibrations, intense noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation. The ability to safely work in inclement weather and around vehicular traffic and heavy equipment is required. The job also requires the ability to routinely walk long distances over rough terrain in noisy and dusty conditions, as well as climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
Pre-employment Requirement: Successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination is a condition of employment for this position.
Work Schedule: The typical work schedule for this position is 37.5 hours per week with eligibility for overtime and holiday pay. Work schedules are determined based on coverage of County Landfill and Compost Facility operations, which are six to seven days a week. Working on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which includes weekends, some holidays, and overtime is required. Shift days and hours are subject to change based on business needs. Working outside of regularly scheduled hours with little or no notice may be required in the event of inclement weather or a department or County emergency.
Starting Salary Range: $23.25 to $33.35 hourly
