The City of Claremont is seeking an Administrative Intern to serve in the Administrative Services Department, which consists of the Office of the City Manager; Human Resources/Risk Management; Public Information; Office of the City Clerk; and Information Technology. Administrative Interns are entry-level positions for current college students or recent college graduates, preferably with a minimum of one year paid or unpaid experience in the public sector and an interest in pursuing a career in public administration. The internship is designed to provide incumbents with the knowledge, skills, and tools that will assist them in future professional endeavors as well as motivate their interest in serving the public. Administrative Interns are enabled to link theory with practice, gain real-world experience, and develop specialized skills that cannot be taught in the classroom.
This opportunity will allow student interns to learn first-hand about public service and the inner workings of City government. Administrative Interns provide support and assistance to management personnel and perform assignments ranging from routine administrative tasks to more complex and varied professional/ specialized assignments. Examples of projects could include report writing; legislative analysis; research and development of City contracts and ordinances; community outreach; and program administration.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Provide public information and assistance.
- Gather, tabulate, and analyze data on a variety of administrative and policy matters.
- Develop recommendations and prepare written and oral reports.
- Draft policies, procedures, resolutions, and ordinances.
- Provide administrative and technical support to the City Manager’s Office and Human Resources Division.
- Assist with the planning and coordination of trainings, meetings, and events.
- Assume the duties of a disaster worker in the event of a locally declared emergency.
The hours of work are flexible, Monday through Thursday, for a maximum of 25 hours per week.

CITY GOVERNMENT
Claremont is a general law city that uses the Council-Manager form of government. A general law city is one that operates under laws and rules established by the State of California.
The City Manager is hired by and responsible to the City Council. It is the responsibility of the City Manager and City staff to implement Council policies and ensure the smooth day-to-day delivery of municipal services. The City Council also appoints a City Attorney to provide legal counsel to the City organization.
The City Council is comprised of five members elected by-district for four years. The terms of offices are staggered, with three members elected at one general municipal election and two at the next. Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March of odd-numbered years.
