The Director of Program Administration (DPA) provides management and strategic direction for the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research (AVC-CR), which includes the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) programs. Responsible for articulating long-term vision and goals as well as managing Sr. Management/Associate Director programmatic staff of interdisciplinary CTSI programs, and other AVR-CR programs that impact the clincal research infrastructure at UCSF (across all the schools, the medical center and UCSF affiliates).
Responsible for recruiting and retaining experienced programmatic clinical research administrative, and key faculty in achievement of institutional and CTSI goals; overseeing MOUs and Affiliate and Service Agreements with program partners; accountable to internal and external board or advisory council. Uses highly specialized expertise in research-specific concepts and objectives. This includes oversight of programs, policy intrepretation and implementation, resource management, personnel administration, development and publication of annual reports, and serving as the point person for interactions with UCSF and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) staff as well as CTSA national consortia activities. Attends and represents CTSI in national conferences or seminars annually for CTSA network and clinical research leaders and administrators through CTSA Administrators Group
The DPA manages CTSI’s multiple clinical and translational programs funded by an approximately $25-$28 million budget. They manage submissions, inter-campus awards, set-up, and ongoing support for administrative supplements. The incumbent also serves on an advisory committee for UC BRAID, a consortium of the five biomedical UC campuses. The DPA will also liase/interface with senior research and administrative leaders across all schools and will participate on working groups and committees.
The DPA supports the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research (AVC-CR). They engage directly with managers and faculty within and across the departments and are a liaison between the AVC-CR and faculty and staff. The incumbent is responsible for aligning the AVC CR’s strategic vision with goal execution, removing roadblocks, performing analysis and gathering data to facilitate decision-making, and ensuring that communications and reporting are happening smoothly and consistently.
The DPA interfaces across multiple functional areas at UCSF, and operates in a shared leadrship structure in partnership with a Director of Operations and a Director of Finance to support the broader AVC-CR Office.

Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required
Skills in project management, change management, and effectively leading large committees, advisory groups, etc
Academic or research background and recognized expertise in selected area
Advanced degree in related area and 7+ years of related experience; and/or equivalent experience and training
Experience creating, sustaining, or participating in training or activities focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion
Expert oral and written communication skills
Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies
Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industry and / or governmental agencies
Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices
Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students
Managerial experience and proven success in managing a complex research or academic program(s)
Strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff
Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities
