I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Department of Athletics, an NCAA Division I member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, actively engages our students, our campus community, our alumni and our fans through the spirit of healthy living and competition. Reporting to the Director, Strength and Conditioning, the Strength and Conditioning Coach will align programming with the overall vision of the Director while also being responsible for the following:
Develops, designs and implements sports performance programs for GWU student-athletes to enhance their strength, power, speed, and agility.
Develops and administers the sports performance program for assigned teams using a holistic and systemic approach.
Educates and directs student-athletes and coaches on the proper techniques and safety standards of appropriate strength and conditioning best practices.
Utilizes heart rate/GPS technology and other exercise physiological testing (in conjunction with the GW Exercise Science Department or outside providers) to enhance the training and biofeedback for our students.
Works directly with the sports medicine department to mitigate injury risk while also working to provide rehabilitation programs for those students working back from injuries.
Analyzes nutritional habits of the student-athletes and, with the support of the Director (and other professionals where it makes sense), provides education on appropriate dietary and nutritional habits- implementing a performance dining plan for the basketball team while assisting with overall execution of performance dining for multiple sports.
Works seamlessly with sports medicine department to ensure best development of all student-athletes.
Remains current and knowledgeable of NCAA and Atlantic 10 compliance-related matters, specific to performance related supplements and substances, introducing only compliant/permissible products to our students.
Assists the Director with organizing, recruiting and instructing strength and conditioning interns and/or graduate students to assist with day-to-day operations of the strength and conditioning department.
Works with the Director to develops, supervises and place into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the performance facility.
Will travel with assigned team throughout the season. May travel with another team sporadically outside of assigned team’s season.
The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC but will require significant domestic travel for games and events. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) is required.
CPR/AED Certified.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in exercise science or kinesiology, with demonstrated sports performance experience, is strongly preferred.
Strength and conditioning coaching experience at the Division 1 or professional level.
Experience working with Division I basketball.
Experience with collegiate and or professional sports teams preferred.
