The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management Chiller Plant team is seeking an HVAC Mechanic. As a member of our team, the successful candidate will be working on fully automated large scale central utility plants. Systems and equipment in these plants represent the engine that drives us toward our efficiency, reliability, and sustainability goals and the successful candidate will be working to ensure their proper function. Our team is entering a new era of technology and as we usher in large scale heat pumps, heat recovery chillers, and geothermal systems there will be an abundance of opportunities to learn and grow while having a front row seat to the evolution of the industry. The successful candidate will report to a chiller plant zone supervisor and work closely with other mechanics. While the successful candidate will spend most of their time performing operation and maintenance activities, there are also opportunities to support the team with respect to controls and water treatment activities. While mechanics receive assignments from a supervisor, they are expected to be capable of working with a team as well as performing tasks with little supervision. Strong mechanical and equipment aptitude is a must as is a sense of ownership and pride in one’s work. Experience with large heavy equipment and/or large industrial equipment is a plus.
Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure and grounds, as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Duties Include:
Repair and maintenance of various types of central plant equipment, including but not limited to, centrifugal chillers, high voltage electrical gear, motor starters, variable speed drives, cooling towers, pumps, refrigerant monitors, valve actuators and air handlers.
Operate the central chilled water plants via the Automated Logic Control (ALC) control system.
Respond to emergencies.
Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, the National Electrical Code, and The Joint Commission.
Assist other trades and become familiar with various equipment and sequence of operation.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of four years of HVAC experience is required. Experience with centrifugal chillers or in central utility plants is preferred.
Licensure: Journeyman HVAC license required. Valid Driver's License. Universal refrigeration certification (Type I, II, or III is acceptable, but the successful candidate will be required to obtain universal certification within 12 months of acceptance)
Compensation:
The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $24.00 – $29.00 per hour ($49,920 - $60,320 Annually). This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands:
The employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks).
