DEFINITION Supervises sewing services engaged in manufacturing or mending institutional garments and linens.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS Positions allocable to this class supervise the work of sewing workers or inmate workers in laying out, cutting, sewing, assembling, altering, mending, tagging and stamping institutional linens, garments and articles in a variety of fabrics, and inspects finished work. Incumbents plan, organize and supervise the sewing operations in an institution. Positions require an extensive knowledge of proper sewing and mending techniques as they relate to the kinds of alterations and repairs made in an institutional setting, extensive knowledge of fabric layout, and skill in the operation of power sewing machines and attachments such as single-needle, double-needle, coverstitch, or overlook, and equipment such as heat stampers and electric cloth cutters.
Essential Job Functions

Supervises and instructs inmate workers on the checking, mending and condemning of worn linens, garments and other articles.
Instructs inmates on the construction of mattresses, uniforms, and other garments.
Instructs inmates on the proper use and safety of sewing equipment.
Plans manufacturing and mending assignments to meet institutional needs.
Records and keeps daily production reports.
Instructs inmates by demonstrating how sewing machine equipment and tools work.
Sews inmate uniforms, bedding, and special projects, as required.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Three years of experience in the operation of a power sewing machine in an institution or commercial establishment, including experience laying out and cutting yardage and altering garments, two years of which must have been assisting in the supervision of sewing workers or inmate workers.
Acceptable Substitution: Completion of a recognized course in power sewing machine operation for six months of the non-supervisory experience*.
PHYSICAL CLASS Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION *In order to receive credit for completion of a recognized course in power sewing machine operation you must include a legible photocopy of the certificate of completion, or the official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specializationat the time of filing or within fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of application filing.Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Credit will be given to applicants, who possess DESIRABLE qualifications and indicate so on their employment application at the time of filing.
Experience beyond the minimum requirements in the operation of a power sewing machine, which may include overlock machine, double-stitch machine, or elastic machine.
Experience beyond the minimum requirements in supervising/instructing others in one or more of the following functions: sewing, assembling, mending, tagging, and/or stamping of institutional garments or linens.
Experience beyond the minimum requirements in supervising/instructing in the safe use and operation of sewing equipment.

EXAMINATION CONTENT This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%. Additional points will be given for experience beyond the minimum requirements listed in desirable qualifications.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
