Boeing's Disruptive Computing & Network (DC&N) team is seeking a Software Controls/Industrial Automation Engineer to help create world class, next generation disruptive systems and technologies. You will be part of an amazing, collaborative team working on proprietary programs. As a highly productive, talented, self-motivated, and creative member of Boeing Research and Technology, you will work with multiple engineering and support groups, on both ongoing operational efforts and exciting future projects. This position will be based out of El Segundo, California.
This position requires demonstrated experience in control system development and industrial process control systems with Programmable Logic Controllers, a diverse background of project experience, and the clear exhibition of superior judgment and decision making to engineer new solutions and support existing capabilities. Demonstrated critical thinking and troubleshooting skills are required.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining process control systems and programming necessary for the operation of equipment and machinery used in the processing of chemicals and noble gases; including documenting, developing, implementing and sustaining equipment and machines for the production, review and approval/comment for supplier developed control system products, validation and inspection of the end product.
Position Responsibilities:
- Control System design based on operating objectives and stakeholder requirements
- Software requirements and functional flow chart development derived from Control System design
- Control system software development in a Siemens environment (Siamatic PLC )
- Plan, develop & maintain new and existing applications
- Perform software lifecycle management, including requirements analysis, detailed design, coding, unit/integration testing, maintenance, and user support (including documentation/training)
- Troubleshoot and resolve various software and control system issues reported by end users
- Plan, develop, select, tailor and deploy software processes, tools and metrics
- Coach and mentor less experienced department personnel to develop their skills and abilities.
- Provide guidance, leadership, mentoring and training for technicians
- Ability to clearly communicate and document programs and functional flows such that it is understandable by peers and can be used in debug and trouble shooting
- Experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, Access, MS SQL) and database management tasks, including, but not limited to schema design/implementation, scripting (e.g., PL/SQL, stored procedures) and schema-level troubleshooting
- Implement and troubleshoot industrial communication networks including Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, DeviceNet, RS-232/422/485
- Experience with industrial control systems including PLCs and instrumentation
- Understanding of PID controller design and operating principals
- Read and understand process documentation including Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, functional flow schematics, and control logic descriptions
- Develop machine programs and documentation using machine programming languages. This includes programming PLCs, and control system tuning
- Integrate multiple pieces of equipment or stations into a system
- Experience with valve, pump and compressor control principals and systems
This position requires the ability to obtain an active U.S. Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required) and ability to complete a CI (Counter Intelligence) polygraph after employment start.
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
- Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other technical degree
- 3+ years of applicable experience in the design, development, operation and maintenance of process equipment control systems with PLCs
- 3+ years of experience in the following areas: programming (e.g., C++, Siemens TIA Portal,Siemens SCL, Siemens Graph ,Siemens WINCC SCADA, Java, XML, C#, IEC 61131-3), operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux)
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
- 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Active security clearance

Level 3
Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification
Level 4
Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification
