EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Under general supervision, performs technical accounting support functions in the preparation, maintenance, and processing of accounting records and financial transactions; inputs, reviews, and approves financial transactions and data in accordance with Generally Accecpted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and City policy for accuracy; identifies, researches and resolves discrepancies; balances accounts and makes adjusting and closing entries; prepares and analyzes schedules, statements and reports, in various formats including spreadsheets; performs computations utilizing specialized and complex financial data; reconciles accounts and financial information; establishes and maintains systems to assure accountability and financial control; processes accounting and financial transactions; provides technical information and instruction regarding applicable procedures and methods to City departments and staff; participates in the training of various departments in the use of computer accounting programs; may supervise the work of assigned staff and provide training; performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
Education equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree in Accounting or closely related field (completion of 60-semester units or 90-quarter units) including specific courses in Intermediate Accounting (proof required)*
AND
One year of full-time equivalent, paid experience performing complex clerical accounting duties*.
**Complex clerical accounting duties may include bank reconciliations, review, and reconciliation of accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, creation, review, and maintenance of vendor records, creation and posting of journal entries, and inventory reconciliations.
Opportunities for Substitution of Education or Experience
Additional experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Ability to create, modify, and maintain spreadsheets;
Ability to work within a computerized financial system;
Ability to operate computers including the use of Internet, databases, and word processing software;
Ability to operate a 10 key by touch;
Ability to comprehend and interpret complex written information;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified. In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
