| Basic Function/Overview: | ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: Mt. SAC seeks to hire faculty from diverse backgrounds in terms of gender, age, race/ethnicity, religion sexual orientation ability, and other identity statuses to join a team committed to transformative education and social justice in serving our diverse student body. The mission of the Ethnic Studies Department is to provide the highest quality education for our diverse student population in an inclusive student-centered environment. As an interdisciplinary field, Ethnic Studies works closely with other departments to assist students in their academic goals. |

| Essential Duties & Responsibilities | - Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent.
- Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.
- Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.
- Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department/division meetings and committees.
- Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.
- Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.
- Effective oral and written communication with students.
- Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.
- Participate in departmental and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities to maintain and improve the instructional program and to provide service to the college.
- In close cooperation with other discipline faculty, participate in the design, evaluation, revision, and development of culturally relevant curriculum, courses, and/or degrees.
- Provide Ethnic Studies discipline expertise in the collaborative creation of
Ethnic Studies curriculum and lead the development of the Ethnic Studies
Program in collaboration with multidisciplinary faculty colleagues. - Work off-campus and competency-based education (CBE) assignments, as
required as part of the regular contract. - Participate in curriculum development, learning outcome development and
assessment. - Participate in appropriate professional development activities and maintain
current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching and
learning strategies.

| Minimum Qualifications | A. The minimum of one of the following awarded/conferred from a regionally accredited institution:
1.Master’s in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies,
Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American
Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies OR
2. Master’s in Ethnic Studies OR
3. The equivalent (please request an equivalency review in the application),
AND
B. Commitment to the community college goals/objectives of providing quality
programs and services for students with diverse abilities and interests; personal
qualities to work effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment;
awareness and commitment to the special needs of non-traditional students. |
| Preferred Qualifications | 1. Ability to communicate curriculum meaningfully for students with diverse backgrounds.
2. Knowledge and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, and academic diversity within community college populations, and how these factors relate to the need for equity-minded and culturally responsive practices in the community college setting.
3. Use of Ethnic Studies methods of inquiry, including but not limited to intersectionality, decolonizing methodology, anti-imperialist and abolitionist studies, and community-oriented activist action research.
4. Knowledge and application of the major epistemological considerations informing the discipline of Ethnic Studies, including relevant history and contexts of the field, contributing theories, and pedagogical approaches.
5. Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues across disciplines to design, revise, and implement new and existing curriculum and to advance the development of Ethnic Studies at the college.
6. Skilled in inclusive teaching practices, shared governance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and commitment to student empowerment, community engagement, equity, anti-racism, and social justice.
7. Ability to communicate effectively with students orally and in writing.
8. Ability to translate curriculum into meaningful learning activities and assessments for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
9. Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population with course offerings intended for those who desire a deeper understanding of Ethnic Studies and its four discipline areas of study: African American/Black Studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Latina/o/x and Chicana/o/x American Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies. |

| Conditions of Employment | The person holding this position is required to be present on Mt. San Antonio College’s campus to perform all essential duties and responsibilities.
This is a full-time, tenure-track (or temporary, one-year), 10/11/12-month contract position that begins in the 2023-24 academic year. Placement on the salary schedule is based on formal education, full-time and/or part-time teaching, and related work experience, up to a maximum placement at step 9.
Official offers of employment are made by Mt. San Antonio College Human Resources and are made contingent upon Board approval. It is also required that a final offer of employment will only be made after the candidate has successfully been live scanned and clearance for employment is authorized by Human Resources. Costs for live scan services shall be borne by the candidate.
