Job Abstract

Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai is working to develop the imaging and radiation methods of the future. Their research seeks to advance the field of radiation therapy through more precise and effective treatments and techniques.

Dr. Atkins is a radiation oncologist focused on the treatment of gastrointestinal and thoracic cancers. Her research focuses on the intersection of oncology and cardiology (termed cardio-oncology), including the adverse effects of cancer therapies (such as radiation therapy) on cardiovascular diseases. The type of research is clinical cancer outcomes research. Dr. Atkins team also performs research in physician workforce trends/disparities, including topics such as paid parental leave, administrative burden, and social media trends.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Atkins, the U-GROW summer research internship offers students the unique opportunity to join a research team for a minimum of ten consecutive weeks and 180 hours.

1.           To be mentored by a physician scientist who will help guide intern in research.

2.           Gain an introductory level knowledge about current concepts in cardio-oncology and principles of patient data collection for clinical research. 

3.           Understand and conduct review and collection of healthcare/physician workforce social media data.

4.           Work with recognized scientists and researchers in the realm of cardio-oncology research in a state-of-the-art facility.

5.           Network with mentors and peers within Dr. Atkins team and the U-GROW network.

6.           Participate in a wide range of campus activities, including lecture series featuring Principal Investigators and peer networking opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities:

1.           Review and research project background with mentor.

2.           Participate in all phases of research including planning, preparation, application, evaluation, and data analysis.

3.           Make novel observations, collect, and interpret data.

4.           Draw sound scientific conclusions based on data analysis.

5.           Present project reviews before colleagues and peers.
