This recruitment will remain open until a sufficient number of applications are received. The City reserves the right to limit the applications to the first 75 applicants. This recruitment may close at any time.

Under close supervision performs a variety of semi-skilled and laboring tasks in maintenance of city parks, and facilities; including golf course and sports complex. Performs related duties as required.

Job Characteristic: Works a varying schedule of hours which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Examples of Duties

When assigned to Parks Maintenance and Sports Complex:

Operates power mowers, edgers, backpack blowers and string trimmers; riding mower.
Weed, plant, transplant, cultivate and spray shrubs and weeds.
Trims shrubs, hedges and trees with hand pruners, loppers, pole saws and power hedge trimmers.
Waters and fertilizes turf.
Applies pesticides and herbicides as required.
Cleans walks, tennis, racquetball and basketball courts.
Assists with ballfield and sports field maintenance and renovation.
Assists with golf course maintenance of tees, greens, fairway, bunkers, and roughs.
Removes trash from parks and facilities.
Assists with irrigation checks, adjustments, and repairs.

When assigned to Iron-Wood Nine Golf Course:

Maintains golf course greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, driving range, roughs, and surrounding landscape.
Mowing, edging, blowing trimming, planting, irrigating, irrigation repairs, and other duties required to maintain a golf course.
Relocation of green cups and pins, tee markers, tee mats; maintenance of ball washers as needed.
Works Saturday mornings and holidays to perform regular maintenance to greens, tees, and bunkers.
Applies fungicides and leach greens after hours as needed.
Maintains and adjust mower reels as needed.
Maintains tees, bunkers, fairways, roughs, and driving range.
Operates equipment used at a golf course to maintain greens, tees, bunkers, fairways and roughs.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Basic methods, practices and procedures used in grounds maintenance.
Chemicals used in landscape application.
Materials, equipment and methods used in tuft maintenance, plant care and landscaping.
Safe work practices.

Ability to:

Read, write and carry out oral and written directions.
Maintain cooperative working relationships.
Learn to operate spray equipment, edgers, mowers and various other pieces of park maintenance equipment and make minor repairs.
Identify types of plants.
Work independently.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily outdoors with full exposure to the elements. Incumbents perform physical labor requiring physical strength and endurance. Incumbent may drive a vehicle on City business, may work under damp conditions and crouch, sit, stand, walk on slippery and/or uneven surfaces, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push,twist, climb ladders and sloping surfaces and grasp, drag, lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds and may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, dust, grease/oil, fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise. Incumbents must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be: One year apprentice-level experience in park or golf course maintenance or a related field. A valid California Commercial driver's license Class B, with air brake and tank endorsement, is required by the end of the incumbent's probation.

A valid California driver's license is required.
