Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in the maintenance of school buildings, facilities and equipment; assists other maintenance personnel with daily work assignments; performs minor repairs independently or on an assigned maintenance crew; and performs other related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Maintenance Service Worker performs unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in the upkeep of school facilities. In contrast, a trades person performs journey-level functions in installing, maintaining and repairing school buildings, facilities and related equipment.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience, education and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical combination would be the following:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in performing minor maintenance and repair work of buildings and grounds, or as an assistant in a building construction trade.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid, appropriate California Driver's License at time of appointment, and throughout employment in a position in this classification; evidence of adequate insurance for motor vehicle which meets the California legal liability insurance requirement and continual insurance coverage throughout employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification stand, walk, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. and more than 50 lbs. with assistance; climb ladders and stairs; maintain balance; push, pull, stoop, kneel, crawl, and bend repeatedly; repetitively use fingers, wrists, and hands while twisting or applying pressure; simultaneously use both arms, legs, and hands; reach overhead; have rapid mental and muscular coordination; hear normal voice conversation; speak clearly; have depth perception and color vision, distinguish shades, see small details and long distances; sit for extended periods of time; operate a vehicle; use a computer and telephone. All employees must be able to comply with work place safety and regulatory requirements, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and those of any other competent authority.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, in changing temperatures, including temperatures below 50° and over 90°, poorly ventilated areas, inadequate lighting, wet or damp areas, confined spaces, at heights using ladders or scaffolding, with electrical hazards and dangerous machinery with moving parts, sharp objects, moderate to high concentrations of allergenic dust, lead, asbestos, fumes, odors, loud noises, vibrations, hands in water, exposure to minor and severe contagious illnesses (cold, flu, chicken pox, etc.), use eye protection, gloves and work boots, moving vehicles, in direct contact with the public, students, and District personnel, with a high volume of work and tight deadlines with continuously changing priorities; and may work alone in the absence of direct supervision.

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs preventive, unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, independently, as instructed in various maintenance projects; repairs and maintains structures and other equipment such as roofs, walls, partitions, ceilings and other building elements, as well as, replacing furnace filters, and adjusting and maintaining motors, belts and shafts; installs and makes minor repairs to furniture, shelving, counters, cabinets, bulletin boards, student desks, projector screens, and pencil sharpeners, etc.; drives and is responsible for assigned vehicle to conduct work throughout the district; works from verbal and written instructions, blueprints, sketches and workorders; orders and stocks an adequate supply of parts and materials;responds to emergency and non-emergency calls as needed; utilizes a variety of maintenance and construction tools and equipment; and maintains records, such as work orders, invoices, materials lists and inspection schedules for various maintenance activities.
TRADE SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Assists skilled maintenance tradespersons as an assistant, or in a crew in various trades; assists by holding, lifting, preparing, positioning and/or supporting materials, equipment, and use of hand tools while installing and repairing of asphalt and concrete surfaces, such as walks and structures, potholes, cracks and cuts; installating forms, mixing, pouring and finishing concrete; installating and repairing doors, door stops, doorknobs, locks, hinges, closures, strike plates and panic bars; laying and repairing floors and roofs including work with asphalt tile and other composition materials; cleaning stopped drains and sewers; replacing faucets, fixtures, broken pipes, washers, valves, fittings and other components; replacing plugs, outlets, elements, light bulbs, light switches, diffusers and ballasts; and preparing surfaces for painting; loads, unloads, and transports building materials, equipment, furniture and various supplies to and from worksite; and performs other related duties as assigned.

RECRUITMENT TYPE: PROMOTIONAL Only current employees may apply.
CERTIFICATION TYPE: PROMOTIONAL Qualified candidates, or Eligibles, who pass all testing stages will be placed on one eligibility list. Current employees will receive additional preference points based on longevity before placement on the list. The top 3 ranks of Eligibles will be certified for a hiring interview.

SCREENING PROCESS
The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION

Requests must be signed by your medical doctor, school psychologist, or learning consultant as appropriate and must be on provider letterhead and contain an actual signature.
EXAM PROTESTS
Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.
ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.
SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.
OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT
Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT
All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement upon recommendation of the hiring manager and approval by Human Resources based upon:
A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.
B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.
C) Difficulty experienced in the recruitment of candidates to meet the vacancy needs in the class.
D) Additional skills or qualifications of the candidate that make them especially qualified for the position.
E) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
