ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical problems on City automobiles, trucks, and a variety of diesel, gasoline and alternative fuel powered vehicles and construction equipment.
• Perform general and specialized preventative maintenance on automobiles, light and medium-duty trucks, tractors, mowers and miscellaneous process equipment. Perform periodical inspections as required by law.
• Tune engines, replace ignition parts, clean and adjust fuel systems. Use electronic scan tools and related equipment for diagnosis and repair of automotive computer systems.
• Repair or replace faulty parts including wheel bearings, brakes, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts.
• Install, repair and upgrade electronic equipment such as radios, sirens, light bars, computers and video systems.
• Cut, weld and fabricate parts.
• Assist other mechanics, clean vehicles and perform facility maintenance.
• Use desktop, laptop and hand-held computers to maintain work, time, and material records.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Physical Activities/Requirements:

• See well enough to read instruction manuals, schematics, digital and analog instruments.
• Speak well enough to converse in person, over the radio and on the telephone and be understood.
• Hear well enough to recognize normal and abnormal mechanical sounds, converse in person, over the radio and on the telephone.
• Stoop, bend, reach to pick up material, crawl into confined spaces, under vehicles and on top of equipment, climb ladders up to 15 feet high to perform repair and inspect work; use arms, hands and fingers to write, draw diagrams, operate personal computer, use hand tools; perform overhead tasks using hand tools.
• Lift and carry up to 100 pounds; have the stamina to work in severe weather during a regular work schedule and beyond in the event of emergencies.

Knowledge of:

• Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
• Principles and procedures of preventative maintenance related to automobiles, trucks and work equipment.
• Operating characteristics of the vehicles and work equipment that is used in municipal maintenance and public safety.
• Computerized information systems, including repair order management, scheduling, on-line repair manuals, parts posting and time keeping.
• Occupational hazards, safe work practices and environmentally sound work habits.

Ability to:

• Perform competent mechanical work including diagnosis, repair and preventative maintenance on automobiles, light and medium-duty trucks, tractors and miscellaneous process equipment.
• Maintain and use a variety of tools and equipment.
• Operate vehicles and equipment to the extent necessary for testing and diagnosis.
• Read and interpret schematics and diagrams.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Work productively in the absence of supervision.
• Work overtime and serve standby duty as required.

Experience and Education:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of full-time experience performing automotive and equipment repair work and preventative maintenance, preferably including practical experience in the maintenance of both diesel and gas powered equipment.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by one year of specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.

License of Certificate:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification as per U.S. EPA Section 609, within the probationary period is required. Ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License.
