Job Abstract

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and implements programs, activities, and events for the Parks & Recreation and Library Services Department. May exercise technical and functional supervision over part-time staff. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Recreation Coordinator is the journey level support class responsible for assisting with and planning services and programs within the Parks & Recreation and Library Services Department. This classification is distinguished from the next higher level of Parks & Recreation Supervisor in that the latter has responsibility for planning, implementing, directing, and supervising functions within the Parks & Recreation and Library Services Department.

Receives general supervision from a department Supervisor or Manager. Exercises functional or technical supervision over part-time staff and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

• Completes accident and incident reports; follows up with parents and customers when necessary; tracks attendance and enrollment of recreation programs.
• Creates flyers, advertising, and social media content to promote department programs, activities, and events.
• Assists in developing policies and procedures for programs and events; assists with the development of assigned area’s budget.
• Responds to public inquiries about assigned projects and programs; ensures excellent customer service is provided at all times.
• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/ local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
• May work irregular work shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing statistical reports and data using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading correspondence and statistical data and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as speech sufficient to communicate in group settings without the aid of a microphone, is also required.

Mental

Operations require almost continuous attention. Incumbents are required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; maintain awareness of surroundings and program participants; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with City management, staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

Environmental

Work is generally performed in a standard office setting and outdoors; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold; dust and air contaminants, and be exposed to potential physical harm. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to drive motorized vehicles and often work with constant interruptions. Incumbent may also be required to climb ladders, work at heights over 10 feet, and drive in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)

Education and/or Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Recreation Coordinator. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess three years’ experience in recreation and community programs, including some leadership experience, and a high school diploma, or any combination of college and experience that totals three (3) years. A Bachelor’s degree in recreation management, public administration or related field is desired.

License/Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California Driver’s License.

Modern principles, practices and philosophies for administering youth, teen, adult and senior recreation programs; appropriate behaviors of youth and how to gain cooperation; working with at-risk populations; senior community needs and programs; methods and techniques of supervising volunteers; basic principles of mathematics; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments; standard office procedures, practices and equipment; modern office practices, methods and equipment, including a computer and applicable software; methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation and writing; proper English, spelling and grammar; occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
