Position description
Geffen Academy at UCLA is a university-affiliated school for students in grades 6-12. We value academic depth and inspiration within a humane educational environment. Reporting to the Head of School, the Dean of Students and School Culture (DoSSC) is a member of the leadership team and leads the school’s co-curricular program and disciplinary procedures. The DoSSC works closely with the leadership team and the Educator body to bring student voice and needs into school decision-making. All members of the Geffen Academy Educator community are responsible for playing a role in the mission to provide and amplify a school culture that embraces a diverse, kind, inclusive, fair and welcoming community.
Core Functions & Duties
This is a multi-faceted and important leadership opportunity that includes the following core functions & duties:
Strategic work, in partnership with school leadership and the divisional deans, to create a mission-aligned campus climate and culture.
Lead Student Life, including the management, training, recruitment, and professional development of all employees within the department.
This position, in consultation with the Heads of School and CAO, will set the working norms, expectations, and high performance standards required of the school.
Partner with appropriate Geffen Academy and UCLA departments for the implementation and facilitation of regular Student Life programming, service learning, and programming influenced by current events. Ensure programs align with Geffen Academy and UCLA policies and procedures when applicable.
Responsible for the management of student related issues, including Child Abuse & Neglect mitigation risk and reporting and Student Title IX investigations. Report to Head of School, Associate Head of School, Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, and other Geffen Academy stakeholders as required. Maintain records in accordance with the school policy and procedures and per FERPA standards for K-12.
Effective and timely programming with the Middle School and Upper School Dean and the Student Services Coordinator, coordination of and participation in campus-wide co-curricular opportunities, including featured speakers, student council, student clubs, student affinity groups, overnight retreats, and other mission-aligned activities.
Serve as lead on Student Life lead events, including all retreats and other events. This includes implementing training requirements and response plans for managing and chaperoning students off site
Ongoing solidification of Geffen Academy’s restorative justice practices.
Develop and implement the School’s disciplinary procedures, policies and findings.
Communicate and document correspondences with families to support students’ needs and programs.
Participate in leadership meetings, including meetings with academic Department Chairs and other administrators as needed.
Oversee the development and implementation of standard operating procedures, coverage plans and overall student worker schedules. Help determine chaperone needs and work and communicate with the Campus Operations Team as directed.
Set the student events calendar in partnership with other key school administrators. Plan events, source speakers, set mission aligned and themed community events, issue agendas, workflow plans, set meetings with stakeholders and ultimately be responsible for the student experience and quality of these events.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
A Master’s degree in education, student services, or related field is required.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in an educational setting, preferably a secondary school, including 5 years in a school leadership role.
Strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the School's mission, vision, and values.
Experience in creating and operating educational programs that focus on supporting school culture programmatically.
Deep commitment to and knowledge of how to support the well-being of secondary students.
Outstanding planning and program design skills, including familiarity working with business offices, including submitting and managing a departmental budget.
Knowledge in seeking efficiencies and contract negotiation preferred.
Deep knowledge of adolescent needs and developmental milestones.
Experience with restorative practices in a secondary school setting.
Working knowledge of Title IX policies and procedures.
Unquestionable personal integrity, excellent judgment, sound instincts, diplomacy and patience, and strong work ethic.
Exceptional listening skills and sensitivity to the needs of others.
Collegially inclined with peers; a willing communicator and collaborator; enthusiastic team player.
Ability to work within a fast paced dynamic school environment.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to articulate and explain complex issues to senior staff, families, and students.
