MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department is an innovative team of engineers focused on the development of cutting-edge autonomous systems, robotics capabilities, and AI solutions for a safer world. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Autonomous Systems Expert. The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced team environment, a broad array of challenging problems, and an opportunity to work with advanced technologies from across the field of autonomy. A successful candidate for this position will serve a critical role in enabling advanced autonomy capabilities both for our sponsors as well as internal efforts at MITRE.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for staying updated on the latest developments in the field of autonomous systems and robotics, in the industry, academia and government.
- Utilize technical expertise to enhance the performance of AI/Autonomous systems, and provide leadership in the adoption of AI technology in robotics hardware
- Lead research initiatives in the field of AI and autonomy, evaluate AI solutions based on sponsor requirements, and provide guidance accordingly.
- Work on robotics-related topics such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human-machine teaming, and multi-robot systems.
- Responsible for carrying forward research initiatives in the field of AI and autonomy into review and implementation.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- The candidate should have a broad understanding of autonomous systems across different domains and experience in robotics-related fields. The ability to articulate autonomy-specific challenges and identify gaps is crucial. Familiarity with the state of the art in the field and knowledge of the challenges of developing robust autonomous and AI systems in real-world scenarios is necessary.
- The candidate must be a US citizen able to obtain and maintain a US government clearance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and excellent communication skills are required.
- The ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systems is a must.
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An advanced degree in a technical field of study
- Experience leading technical or project teams, practical knowledge of simulation environments for AI/autonomous systems
- U.S. Citizen with active/current DoD Secret Clearance
- Experience developing machine learning solutions with modern tool chains
- Experience with robotics software and frameworks and object-oriented programming languages such as C++ and python
