Applicant must be willing to attend a (3-month) 176 hour physically intensive Jail Academy and commit to passing it within 1 year of hire.

Job Summary:
A Jailer is a non-sworn, uniformed position in the Police Department. Under general supervision operates and maintains prisoner custody facilities, processes and cares for the health, safety and welfare, and transport of persons in custody, and does other related work as assigned.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
Receives, processes, and searches prisoners.
Books, photographs, and fingerprints suspects; oversees permitted phone calls.
Maintains records related to suspects in custody.
Observes and routinely checks persons in custody to assure their health and safety.
Issues food and supplies; checks and maintains inventory.
Returns prisoners' property upon release.
Prepares prisoners for court appearances and transports and releases prisoners to the custody of the court.
Performs routine housekeeping duties on weekends.
Accesses CAL-ID for proof of prisoner identification when necessary.
Successfully completes 24 hour annual training program and all other in-service training as required.
Fingerprints and registers parolees, sex offenders, and job applicants.
Typical Qualifications
Required Knowledge:
Knowledge of principles and practices related to the operations of a jail facility; effective communication practices and techniques both oral and written including knowledge of correct English usage; and principles and methods of record keeping as applied to jail operations. Proficiency using a personal computer is desirable. Knowledge of effective personal relations practices so as to deal effectively with the public and prisoners.
Education:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is required. College level coursework in liberal arts, public administration, police science or closely related field desirable.
Experience:
Experience working in a position performing custodial care duties and/or dealing with members of the public.
License:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record.
Background check:
Ability to successfully pass an intensive background check including polygraph, psychological and medical examination with drug screen.
Selection Process:
Candidates deemed most qualified will be invited to take a written examination. Candidates who successfully pass the written exam will have the opportunity to participate in an oral board interview.
Working conditions:
Employees are required to work 12-hour rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends. Must successfully complete 176 hours of Standard and Training for Corrections (S.T.C.) Core Training.
Physical Requirements:
Must have physical strength necessary to restrain and control combative and uncooperative individuals. This position also requires extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard. It also requires physical abilities associated with the ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment requiring no extraordinary physical strength or other special physical qualifications.
